7 Societal Double Standards That Will Drive Any Parent Crazy

July 29, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Being a parent is a joyous and challenging journey that comes with its fair share of trials and tribulations. While society often holds parenting to certain standards, it can be frustrating to witness the double standards that persist. These double standards can drive any parent crazy, as they create unfair expectations and judgments. In this article, we’ll explore some of the most exasperating double standards that parents face in today’s society. Read on to know more!

1. The Working Parent Double Standard

It’s frustrating to witness the double standard in balancing work and family life. Mothers pursuing careers are criticized for not spending enough time with their children, while fathers rarely face the same scrutiny. This undermines both parents’ efforts and perpetuates unfair gender stereotypes. Let’s break free from these double standards and appreciate all parents’ hard work in both their professional and family lives.

2. The Stay-At-Home Parent Double Standard

The Stay-At-Home Parent Double Standard

On the flip side, stay-at-home parents also face their fair share of double standards. Society often undervalues the work and dedication that stay-at-home parents put into raising their children. These parents may be judged for not having a “real job” or for being less ambitious. However, the truth is that raising children is a full-time job in itself, requiring immense patience, multitasking, and emotional investment. The double standard belittles the importance of parenting as a profession.

3. The Helicopter Parent Double Standard

Parenting today is a delicate tightrope walk between being an involved parent and avoiding the helicopter parent label. Society demands active engagement from parents, but there’s a frustrating double standard. If you’re too involved, you face criticism for being overprotective. But if you take a hands-off approach, judgment follows for not being involved enough. Striking the right balance is a challenging task, as parents navigate between societal expectations and doing what’s best for their own family. It’s an art of finding equilibrium in a world where standards constantly shift.

4. The Discipline Double Standard

The Discipline Double Standard

Disciplining our children is an integral aspect of parenting, but it’s disheartening to witness the double standard surrounding disciplinary methods. Parents who opt for traditional approaches like time-outs or spankings are often condemned for being too harsh. Conversely, those who take a more lenient approach are deemed lacking in control or not invested enough in their children’s behavior. This contradictory judgment leaves parents feeling bewildered and uncertain about the most effective and socially acceptable disciplinary techniques. It’s a tough spot to be in, as we strive to guide our children while grappling with the expectations and mixed messages from society.

5. The Body Image Double Standard

The Body Image Double Standard

Society places an enormous emphasis on physical appearance, and parents often feel the weight of this pressure. Mothers, in particular, face a significant double standard when it comes to body image. They are expected to “bounce back” and regain their pre-pregnancy bodies quickly. On the other hand, fathers are rarely subjected to the same level of scrutiny. This double standard not only undermines the physical changes that women go through during pregnancy but also perpetuates unrealistic beauty standards.

6. The Single Parent Double Standard

The Single Parent Double Standard

Single parents face a multitude of responsibilities and hurdles on their own, but it’s disheartening to see them confronted with double standards. Society often idealizes the notion of a two-parent household, leaving single parents feeling judged and marginalized for not conforming to this idealized mold. Single mothers, especially, are unfairly subjected to scrutiny and unfounded assumptions about their ability to provide for their children adequately. This double standard overlooks the remarkable resilience and strength displayed by single parents and undermines the invaluable contributions they make to their children’s lives every single day. It’s time we recognize and appreciate the incredible dedication and love that single parents pour into their families, standing as shining examples of unwavering commitment and courage.

7. The Parenting Style Double Standard

Parenting Style Double Standard

Every parent has their own unique parenting style, influenced by their upbringing, values, and personal experiences. However, society often imposes a double standard by favoring certain parenting approaches over others. For example, parents who adopt a more strict or authoritative parenting style may be criticized for being too controlling, while those who embrace a more permissive style may face judgment for being too lenient. This double standard fails to recognize that different children may respond better to different parenting approaches and stifles individuality in parenting choices.

Parenting is a demanding and rewarding journey, but it becomes even more challenging when parents have to navigate through society’s double standards. From single parents facing unnecessary judgment to the work-life balance pressures and the restrictions on parenting styles, these double standards hinder the growth and well-being of both parents and children. It is essential for society to acknowledge and challenge these biases, fostering an environment that supports and respects the diverse choices and challenges faced by parents. Let’s strive for a society that empowers and uplifts parents, celebrating their efforts in raising the next generation.

Futurama Returns to Hulu: A Funny, Timely New Season

July 29, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

It goes without saying that a lot has changed in our world since 2013, and Futurama—a show always fond of commenting on current events, despite being set in the 31st century—is eager to embrace the culture of 2023. It’s just as eager to acknowledge the surreal feeling that accompanies Futurama’s long-awaited, they-said-it-couldn’t-be-done return, though it gets most of those winks (and there are a lot, including one actual fourth-wall break) out of the way in episode one, “The Impossible Stream.”

Even before the opening credits, Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) has explained away the “massive disruption in the flow of time” which has taken the Planet Express gang from the year 3000—the year Fry (also Billy West), a pizza-delivery guy accidentally frozen in 1999, was revived in the original series—to 3023. Or to put it another way, courtesy of boozy robot Bender (John DiMaggio): “Why is my beer stale?” Because you and your shiny metal ass have aged 10 years, sir! With that taken care of, Futurama is on its merry way.

io9 was provided six of the 10 episodes for review, and we won’t be spoiling specific plot points here. But it’s not giving anything away to note some of the timely topics season 11 pokes into. These include the overwhelming feeling of trying to keep up with streaming shows (Futurama’s in-universe service of choice: “Fulu;” definitely hit pause when it shows the home screen to read all the punny yet oddly familiar names for the various series); and the “high-tech gold rush” world of bitcoin and cryptocurrency, literally interpreted with a Wild West theme. It also introduces “Momazon,” an Amazon-alike that unleashes smart-home assistants that are a little too smart; alarmingly speedy deliveries that Planet Express, a small business, can’t compete with; deplorable conditions for warehouse workers; and the idea that an algorithm knows what you want to shop for before you even search for it (this episode’s title is “Related to Items You’ve Viewed”).

There’s also an Ivermectin joke—and though it wasn’t included in the first six episodes, the trailer for this season promises there’ll be even more pandemic humor. Plus, there’s almost an entire episode inspired by Dune, with a very well-placed celebrity voice cameo. Beyond that, Futurama shows there’s still heart lurking beneath the snark, examining themes like motherhood, pet ownership, and building relationships—family, romantic, and among friends—despite being surrounded by ridiculous chaos.

Though it can sometimes feel like the show is racing along trying to cram in fan-favorite characters (Robot Devil! Calculon! Robot Santa Claus! The Hypnotoad!), and that first episode leans awfully hard into the self-referential stuff, it all feels very rooted in the show Futurama has always been—with weird asides, clever gags, and characters you can’t help but love, even though they tend to always do the wrong thing. The leap to 2023 feels as seamless as it could possibly feel, which is truly the greatest way to please old-school fans and, hopefully, the legions of new ones this revival will bring into the fold.

Futurama was created by Matt Groening and developed by Groening and David X. Cohen. The rest of the voice cast includes Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, and David Herman. Futurama’s new season premieres July 24 on Hulu.

Declan Rice makes Arsenal Premier League title vow and singles out “crazy” new team-mate – Mirror Online

July 28, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Declan Rice has his eyes on winning the Premier League title in his first season at Arsenal – and hopes that “crazy” team-mate Bukayo Saka can help the Gunners become champions.

Rice, 24, recently linked up with Saka and co in a record-breaking transfer deal worth £105million. Already in the thick of it while on the club’s tour of the United States, the former West Ham captain has been loving life among his new team-mates, and knows exactly what manager Mikel Arteta is aiming for when the serious stuff gets started in August.

Arsenal finished second in Premier League last season, five points behind champions Manchester City, despite comfortably holding first place for the vast majority of the campaign. Rice is aiming to help the Gunners “go one better” this time around, telling the club’s YouTube channel: “I can’t wait!

“When I signed I was speaking to the manager and when we were stood there looking out from the box, it was so surreal. What a stadium and we’re very lucky to play our home football there. Last year, the place was crazy with the atmosphere and the fans. Some of the games… hopefully this year we can go one better and excite the fans even more.”

Then England international went on to laud Arsenal star Saka, who he’s already shared the stage with at two major international tournaments and was sat next to during the interview. “You wouldn’t have known this but I watched you play for England’s under 17s at St George’s [Park] or under 18s,” Rice told his new club team-mate.

“He played left wing-back, that’s when I first saw Saka, the growth since then has just been crazy! Straight away everyone just loved him just because of just how he is, he’s happy and on the training pitch he works so hard. I think he had the respect of everyone straight away.”

Have your say! Will Arsenal win the Premier League title next season? Let us know your prediction in the comments section.

It’s not the first time that the 24-year-old has heaped praise on Saka. After the Gunners ace scored for England to help them reach the World Cup quarter-finals last November, 15 months after missing a penalty in the final of Euro 2020 as the Three Lions were agonisingly beaten on home soil by Italy, Rice was quoted by the Evening Standard as saying: “It’s unbelievable what he’s done.”

“It says everything about his strength of character. You saw what happened last summer, everyone was with him then. He is flourishing with Arsenal, he is playing with a smile on his face. You see him around the training ground, he is the happiest person around the place. We are all so happy for him.”

Covina is now officially funnier with grand opening of Laugh Factory – San Gabriel Valley Tribune

July 28, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

The city of Covina could be on its way to becoming the next comedy hotspot thanks to the opening of one of the biggest stand-up club chains around.

The world-famous Laugh Factory, which soft opened its doors in June inside the Covina Theater with performances by comics like Dane Cook, Jamie Kennedy and Azusa native Debi Gutierrez, will soon host its official grand opening event headlined by Mexican-American actor and stand-up comic Paul Rodriguez.

“They couldn’t get anybody cheaper,” the “Born in East L.A.” and “The Original Latin Kings of Comedy” star joked during a recent phone interview. Rodriguez, who is a longtime supporter and regular performer at the other Laugh Factory locations, will headline along with fellow Latino comic Gene Pompa during several sets scheduled for the christening of the venue on July 27-30.

The location of the new club is appealing, Laugh Factory general manager Harry Basil pointed out, noting that he expects it to attract audiences who finally don’t have to drive too far — either to clubs and theaters in Los Angeles, Long Beach or down to Orange County — for a comedy show.

“A lot of people don’t want to drive to Hollywood for an hour,” he said. “We looked at the map and we saw that Covina, from the East to the West, there are a lot of people there that would like to go to a comedy club and support a comedy club. We’re gambling that there’s a lot of an audience that would go there on a regular basis.”

“People are going to get good shows,” Rodriguez added.

Located in downtown Covina on busy Citrus Avenue, the new venue is housed inside the Covina Theater, which first opened its doors in 1920 before undergoing various major renovations. It was acquired by the city in 2022. The city then partnered with the Laugh Factory to operate the venue. The Laugh Factory crew made additional upgrades including repainting the lobby, adding more booths and seating in the balcony, while also elevating the lounge and food and beverage areas.

Since owner Jamie Masada opened the flagship location on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles in 1979, the Laugh Factory has brought clubs to Chicago, Las Vegas, Long Beach, Reno, San Diego and now the latest 180-seat venue in Covina.

“It’s a gorgeous theater,” Basil said. “We’re a world-famous brand and we’ll be bringing world-class entertainment and I think this is going to be one of the crown jewels in the chain because it’s a beautiful venue.”

The Laugh Factory has helped launch the careers of comics like Nick Cannon, Tiffany Haddish and has hosted comedy legends like Richard Pryor, Paul Mooney, Jon Lovitz, Damon Wayans, Bob Saget and Dave Chappelle. Since the newest Laugh Factory will be booking national headliners and comedians with major TV and film credits, Basil also expects that the venue will become a place where acts can film comedy specials and the space can also accommodate musical acts, like tribute bands, as well.

Guests need to be 21-and-older to purchase tickets for shows, however, responsible guests that are 21-and-older can sponsor up to two 18-20 year-olds within their party.  There is a full bar with various cocktails and specials and there’s a light menu featuring items like beef or chicken wraps, chips with salsa and guacamole, hummus served with pita bread and veggies, spinach and artichoke dip and more. There is also a two-item minimum food or beverage purchase for each guest that includes alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Though the venue has been in soft opening for a little over a month, Basil said he’s excited about the grand opening, which will include an invitation-only red carpet affair ahead of the show on Thursday, July 27.

“It’s a total red carpet event with a spotlight out in front, ribbon cutting, it’s going to be a fun night,” he said.

Grand opening weekend comic Gene Pompa, who has regularly performed on the other Laugh Factory stages, said he’s happy to see another Laugh Factory open in Southern California.

“It’s in a good spot and I’m really looking forward to it,” he said during a phone interview. “Laugh Factory is always top-notch; you know the checks are going to clear. I think what’s the most exciting about it is that it’s not in a traditional metropolitan area. It’s Covina. It’s like opening up a comedy club in Mayberry. That makes it kind of cool.”
