Lionel Messi gives his opinion on this year’s “crazy” Ballon d’Or possibility – Mirror Online
Paris Saint-Germain ace Lionel Messi has opened up on the possibility of him winning a record seventh Ballon d’Or, admitting it would be “crazy”.
The Argentine sensation, 34, has already won the prestigious award more times than anyone else and is the favourite for this year’s prize.
Messi won just one trophy during his final season at Barcelona, the Copa del Rey, and has made a tricky start to life at PSG, failing to score in his five Ligue 1 outings.
The forward did, however, inspire Argentina to their first Copa America title in 28 years – winning his first major honour at international level after losing four previous finals.
Speaking about his Ballon d’Or prospects with SPORT, Messi said: “If I’m honest, I don’t think so [he can win it].

“My biggest prize was what I was able to achieve with the national team. After having fought and fought so much for that achievement, it was the best for all it cost.
“If the golden ball arrives it would be extraordinary for what it would mean winning one more. The seventh would be crazy. If not, nothing happens.
“I have already achieved one of my great goals. I am very happy for what happened and now that whatever has to happen, happens.”
Messi has already enjoyed a glittering career on the pitch, winning ten league titles, seven domestic cups and the Champions League four times.
The Argentine is regarded as the greatest footballer in history by many fans and critics – a debate that’s likely to rumble on for years to come.
And some believe there’s still much more to come from Messi after he signed a two-year deal with European contenders PSG in August.
Discussing his place in football history, he added: “I do not know. The only thing I always tried is to handle myself with respect and humility, to fight for my dreams and goals.
“I had to fall many times and not be able to fulfil it. I always decided to get up and try again. It happened to me many times with Barcelona and more with Argentina, with many painful defeats.
“The message to my children and young boys who look at me or follow me to fight for their dreams, fight and show that anything is possible.”

Messi also discussed his future with PSG, insisting he still enjoys playing professionally after his emotional exit from Barcelona.
He continued: “Yes of course [I still enjoy the game]. If not, you would not be competing at this point, looking for new goals and new challenges.
“I enjoy what I like so much and keep winning the title and the more the merrier but always enjoying every moment.”

Tesco shoppers were left in hysterics after a store worker decided to spice up the supermarket’s closing announcement.
Nathan Lorenzo told shoppers in a tannoy announcement that the store was closing in 10 minutes – but it was done in such a hilarious way the video has almost three million views on TikTok.
The employee even ignored his manager while carrying out the act of genius, My London reports.
In the video, Nathan says: “Good evening my pumpkins.
“It’s yours truly and this is a customer announcement. Now don’t go shooting the messenger but I do have some awful news I have to inform you on.
“And that awful news is that we will be closing in the next 10 minutes.
“So if you can all select those final items, grab the bottle of [inaudible] and foxtrot down to our checkouts.
“Where you will be served by the fabulous Sean. I hope you all have a lovely evening and thank you, once again, for shopping with us today at Tesco.”
At one point in the video, the worker’s manager can be heard shouting “Nathan!” but Nathan disregards him.
During the announcement, shoppers can be heard laughing in the background, although the manager appears to be annoyed, and at one point says: “Err no.”
After the video was posted on TikTok, some people took to the comments to stand up for Nathan and praise him for being “brilliant”.
One person said: “What does he mean ‘err no’? You did it better than anyone else I’ve ever heard.”
Another commented: “Tesco you need to give him a raise and tell that manager to lighten up because if I heard this on the tannoy it would make my day.”
A third wrote: “Tesco should be proud to have such a brilliant employee.
“You bring brightness into this robotic and scary world.”
Nathan reassured users that he had not been sacked, although he did reveal he was told to be careful of what he posts on social media.

The Manchester United trio have watched the teenage sensation score in each of the Red Devils’ three Premier League matches this season and have waxed lyrical about the ruthless academy product.
Greenwood’s winning strike in United’s 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers before the international break saw the 19-year-old become one of only four teenagers to have scored 20 Premier League goals, following in the footsteps of Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and club legend Wayne Rooney.
Unsurprisingly receiving praise from across the footballing world and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Greenwood also has glowing validation from his teammates Maguire, Shaw and Sancho.

Speaking to UMM for their Man Utd Assumptions Special, captain Maguire said: “He’s so young, so refreshing. He’s got everything – every attribute to keep pushing on and improving.
“You’ve seen he can play down the right and the middle as well. I think the hardest thing in training is that you can’t give him a yard, because if you give him a yard it ends up in the back of the net, his finishing is that good.
The skipper added: “In a 5-a-side you always want him on your team because he’s always one of the top goalscorers!”
Meanwhile, Shaw raved about the Red Devils starlet but firstly gave himself some praise.
“He hates coming up against me in training! But the talent he’s got is so scary it’s unbelievable,” the England international claimed.

Sancho, who arrived from Borussia Dortmund in an initial £73million transfer deal during the summer window, has already spent enough time at United to know how “crazy” Greenwood is.
The two, along with Marcus Rashford, could form an all-English forward line at Old Trafford for years to come, something that the 21-year-old is relishing.
“That’s going to be a crazy link up when Marcus gets back,” Sancho excitedly stated.
“Obviously I’ve seen a bit of Mason recently in training – he’s crazy.
“We’re still getting to know each other, obviously movements and things like that, getting our understanding, but it’s going to be crazy all three of us on the pitch.”
For that to happen, the ex-Dortmund winger will have to bring his Bundesliga form to the Premier League and Sancho himself is looking to do just that.
“I’m going to keep playing my game,” he affirmed.
“I’m not going to change what I’ve been doing over in Germany. I’ve just got to bring it here and hopefully I can show the fans what I can deliver.”
