‘Wicked’ Movie Lands ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Director Jon M. Chu – Deadline
EXCLUSIVE: After adapting Lin Manuel-Miranda’s In the Heights for Warner Bros, Jon M. Chu has his sights set on adapting one of Broadway’s biggest hits. Sources tell Deadline that Chu will direct Universal’s Wicked, the feature-film adaptation of the record-breaking musical phenomenon that is in its 17th smash-hit year on Broadway.
The three-time Tony Award-winning stage musical was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel by book writer Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who are also collaborating on the screenplay adaptation. Marc Platt will produce for his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions. Wicked is produced on Broadway by Universal Stage Productions, Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

Timing is everything and in this situation it worked out nicely for both parties. Last fall, Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry left the project after the studio was looking to move fast on the long-awaited adaptation. Around the same time, Chu had to part ways with Disney+’s new Willow series he was planning to direct due to issues with Covid-19 that kept pushing production. On top of that, Chu is expecting a baby. With Chu’s schedule open and Wicked looking for a director, the timing worked out for both sides.
With a national tour and multiple international productions, the stage musical has been seen by over 60 million people worldwide, making it one of the most successful theatrical ventures of all time. The winner of over 100 international awards including Grammys and three Tony Awards, Wicked has been performed in over 100 cities in 16 countries around the world (U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Japan, Germany, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, The Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Switzerland, and China) and has been translated into six languages: Japanese, German, Dutch, Spanish, Korean and Portuguese.
Senior EVP Production Erik Baiers and director of development Lexi Barta will oversee the project on behalf of Universal .
Besides adapting In the Heights, which will premiere in theaters and on HBO Max later this year, Chu directed the box office smash Crazy Rich Asians for Warner Bros. Chu is repped by UTA, Artists First Inc and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher, LLP.

AOC Posts Photo Of Her ‘Glaring’ At Joe Manchin: Not ‘Obligated’ To Smile At People Doing ‘Hurtful Things’
Far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on Tuesday posted a photo of her glaring at Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) during a past State of the Union address, commenting that she doesn’t have an “obligation” to “smile” at people doing “hurtful things,” apparently referring to Manchin.
Manchin this week effectively tanked President Joe Biden’s expensive, hyper-progressive “Build Back Better” agenda after the White House seemingly tried to bully the Democrat.
An Instagram user sent a message to AOC reading, “Your glare at Manchin was *everything*.”
“I tried to warn y’all,” Ocasio-Cortez responded in text overlapping the infamous photo.
“So here’s your reminder that your smile is a gift and you are not obligated to give it to anybody or anything just to keep up appearances or make people feel comfortable when they are doing hurtful things,” she wrote.
On the same post, AOC added, “The Wall Street Journal ran a whole column about how *I* was a misbehaved, scowling lady after this incident too.”

Earlier this week, Ocasio-Cortez used profanity to rage against Manchin.
“Our entire democracy is on the line,” she wrote on Twitter. “We, as always, are here to fight for this agenda. What matters most to us is that it gets done.”
“We cannot just shrug our shoulders and accept this as some Charlie Brown moment,” she continued. “So we need to get back in there and get this s*** done. Period.”
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was even more extreme, calling Manchin’s explanation “bulls****,” The Daily Wire reported.
“We all knew that Senator Manchin couldn’t be trusted,” she said, adding, “The excuses that he just made, I think, are complete bulls***. It is really disheartening to hear him say that he has been trying to get there for the people of West Virginia because that’s a complete lie. The people of West Virginia would greatly benefit from their families having access to long-term elderly care and care for folks with disabilities. They would benefit from the expansion of the child tax credits. They will benefit from having access to pre-k. There are just so many things that, you know, the people of West Virginia desperately need. And we know that he is not working on behalf of their interests, and I really am just completely disappointed and disgusted by his reasoning.”
Manchin made it clear that he couldn’t find a way to support the legislation, despite repeated efforts to do so.
“I cannot vote to continue with this piece of legislation. I just can’t. I’ve tried everything humanly possible. I can’t get there,” the Democrat said on Fox News. “This is a no on this legislation. I have tried everything I know to do. And the president has worked diligently. He’s been wonderful to work with. He knows I’ve had concerns and the problems I’ve had and, you know, the thing that we should all be directing our attention towards, the variant, a COVID that we have coming back at us in so many different aspects in different ways, it’s affecting our lives again.”
