Kiszla: Nuggets’ championship was born way back in 2016 with a crazy idea: Nikola Jokic could be better than Larry Bird.

June 22, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

A championship parade through the streets of Denver that will make Nuggets Nation cheer and clap louder than thunder began with one bold step on a sad day in Dallas nearly seven years ago.

This is the story of the precise moment when a fly-over NBA city gambled everything on a 21-year-old Serbian forward with a soft shooting touch and a softer belly.

As the Nuggets get ready to parade the shiny gold Larry O’Brien trophy through downtown, I’m here to tell you that maybe the most momentous date in team history is Dec. 12, 2016, when a struggling team searching for answers got blown out by 30 on the road against the Mavericks.

That’s when the brain trust of Nuggets president Josh Kroenke, general manager Tim Connelly and coach Michael Malone leaned hard into the analytics and embraced a radical hypothesis many in the league would dispute to this day:

Nikola Jokic is the second coming of Larry Bird.

“(Connelly and I) sat down and looked at the analytics. We were trying to play two talented big guys in the starting lineup at the same time and it wasn’t working, when everybody in the league was going small because of Golden State’s success,” Kroenke told me Monday night, in a champagne-drenched locker room after the Nuggets beat Miami 94-89 to close out the NBA Finals in five games.

“… At that point, Nikola was coming off an all-league rookie season. We had a data set on him we could really look at, about a year and a half of play. So we did a Player A and Player B comparison, standardized to 36 minutes per game production, looking at everything.”

The findings were jaw-dropping.

“The only caveat was Player A played basketball for four years in college and was two years older than Player B at the time of their second seasons in the NBA. But the same point in their careers, you could clearly see that Player B was better than Player A, based on the physical evidence,” recalled Kroenke, his eyes twinkling with the memory.

“Player B was Nikola Jokic. Player A was Larry Bird.”

With little more to rely on except a page of outrageously optimistic data points and gut instinct, the Nuggets dared to dream a second-round draft choice could grow up to be Bird, revered for being the league’s MVP three times and leading the Celtics to three championships on his way to enshrinement in the Hall of Fame.

Was it a crazy notion? You bet.

A little more than a month earlier, shortly before Thanksgiving 2016, Jokic went to Malone and volunteered to give up his spot in the starting lineup as a power forward alongside center Jusuf Nurkic.

In defiance of the league trend, the Nuggets were futilely trying to to build a winner around twin towers, by playing Jokic out of position at forward. Long before he grew into “a triple-double machine” admired by Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, a young Jokic already saw everything on the court unfold more clearly than anyone else. At age 21, he convinced Malone to shelve the twin towers experiment after a November loss to those ballyhooed Warriors in which Jokic scored only a single basket and two free throws during 18 unproductive minutes.

But shortly thereafter, on that sad December night in Dallas when the Nuggets’ record dropped to 9-16, the team’s brain trust committed to an idea that changed everything. Armed with analytics that suggested an under-utilized reserve could be as productive as Bird, Malone looked himself in the mirror and asked: “What am I doing?”

Three days later, when Denver returned home to play Portland, Malone re-inserted Jokic as a starter at his natural position of center and benched Nurkic. It was a move that so upset Nurk, a 2014 first-round pick, that the relationship with the Bosnian Beast and the team soon ended in a messy divorce.

On Dec. 12, 2016, the Nuggets decided to bet everything on Jokic.

“And that’s when our team took off,” Malone recalled at the outset of the NBA Finals. “He became the focal point of everything we did.”

The Nuggets not only re-imagined their offense around an innovative concept Jokic has since mastered as a passing wizard best described as a point center, the organization built its winning culture on his broad shoulders.

So it’s not a stretch to suggest the first championship in the franchise’s 56-year history is the by-product of a bromance between a coach who’s as saucy as a slice of New York pizza and a gentle giant who’d rather be in Serbia cleaning out his horse stables than take a ride on a fire truck along a raucous victory parade route.

While Malone now calls it the best decision of his coaching life, it took guts to entrust his job to a 21-year-old who had only shown flashes of brilliance up until then. A center now lauded as half Tim Duncan, half Magic Johnson and totally amazing never would’ve grown into a 6-foot-11 basketball unicorn without the brave commitment of Malone.

“The guy gave me everything,” Jokic told me back in 2021, shortly before he won the first of back-to-back MVP trophies. Malone “gave me the freedom, he showed me the way. We built a great relationship, not just he’s the coach and I’m a player. We are friends, too. It’s more than basketball.”

This is a basketball love story conceived in analytics that resonated with the logical left side of the organization’s brain, then was brought to life by the creative sorcery of a big Serbian’s imagination in a potent mix of science and art.

The payoff?

On Denver streets long paved with the fatalism that a championship could never happen here, Nuggets Nation will gather during a parade to be bedazzled by the O’Brien trophy’s beautiful gold basketball, shining in the Colorado sun.

British PM caught on camera making very non-politically correct joke about trans ideology: ‘We need to focus on biology’

June 22, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is under fire after a video surfaced showing him mocking a liberal politician who believes in trans ideology.

Video from a meeting of conservative politicians on June 5, which was leaked to PinkNews, showed Sunak making fun of Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, a minority party in the British government. Davey is a supporter of trans ideology, and he believes that trans women (i.e., biological men) should be afforded the same rights as biological women.

“You may have noticed Ed Davey has been very busy. Like me, you can probably see that he was busy trying to convince everybody that women clearly had penises,” Sunak said.

“You’ll all know that I’m a big fan of everybody studying maths to 18, but it turns out that we need to focus on biology to 18,” he joked.

Davey’s views on trans ideology, Sunak also said, demonstrate his “spectacular misjudgement” and “why he’s completely unfit to lead our country.”

Sunak was referring to his plan to mandate math studies for British students until they reach age 18. The plan seeks to combat a below-average numeracy among British adults.

By applying his plan to biology, Sunak suggested that more education could undermine trans ideology that masquerades as if human biology does not establish clearly designed biological sex in the absence of rare genetic disorders.

Downing Street responded to the video Monday by defending Sunak. A spokesperson for the premier said he was targeting Davey specifically, not trans people generally.

“You’ve heard the prime minister talk about his enormous compassionate understanding for people questioning their identity and that they should be treated with dignity and respect,” the spokesperson said, the Guardian reported. “On this specific issue, these are points he’s made in interviews, publicly … My understanding is that this was a joke aimed at a political opponent rather than a specific group.”

Personally, Sunak believes that trans people should be “respected,” but believes biology is “important” and “fundamental” when considering the impact of trans ideology on public policy.

Davido: I turned musician after seeing ladies go crazy for Psquare, Wizkid at US club – TheCable Lifestyle

June 22, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Davido says he chose music as a career after seeing “girls go crazy” for Wande Coal, Wizkid, and Psquare at a nightclub in the United States.

In a recent interview, Davido said he was relaxing with some artistes at Club Rehab when the Nigerian singers walked in.

He said seeing the way Wizkid, Wande Coal, and Psquare were celebrated by ladies when they entered the club “made me want to be like them”.

Davido said he thereafter told his dad he was no longer interested in going back to school.

He said he wanted to come back to Nigeria and focus on music because he saw that the country’s entertainment industry was beginning to flourish.

“So we go to the club, then another set of artistes walk in, this club called Club Rehab, I think Psquare, Wizkid, he was just coming up, and then Wande Coal was there,” the singer said.

“When they walked in, all the girls went crazy and I said to myself, I want that. That was the day I said I’m not going back to school.

“I actually wanted to move back to Nigeria because I saw the industry growing. I had the drive, that is what I wanted to do.

“So I told my dad that I wanted to transfer my credits in my college from Alabama to Nigeria. I remember going to my dad and he was like I should go back to school.

“I came back to Nigeria because I knew it was going to become something and I did not want to be left out.”

In 2011, Davido put out ‘Back When’, the first song from his debut album ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ (2012).

He rose to fame after releasing ‘Dami Duro’, the second single from his debut studio album.

In the last decade, the Afrobeats singer has put out multiple chart-topping singles.

This includes ‘Gobe’, ‘One of a Kind’, ‘Skelewu’, ‘Aye’, ‘Owo Ni Koko’, ‘If’, ‘Fall’, ‘Fia’ and ‘Assurance’ among others.

Davido would later release two other albums ‘A Good Time’ and ‘A Better Time‘ in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Davido released ‘Timeless’, his fourth album which housed 17 tracks, on March 31.

Since the album’s release, ‘Timeless’ has continued to garner millions of streams across music platforms.

Pedro Pascal Stars In Hilarious (Fake) Mario Kart x HBO Trailer

June 21, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Gif: SNL

When I see news that Saturday Night Live has released another sketch dedicated to the Mario Kart franchise, I get flashbacks.

I think we all remember the frankly quite frightening episode of Saturday Night Live back in 2021 where the world’s second-richest man and currently the world’s most punishing poster Elon Musk hosted. It wasn’t just unfunny because he was there (although his first-time-speaking-to-humans delivery definitely didn’t help), but it almost felt like every sketch he appeared in was specifically designed in a lab to trigger a fight-or-flight response to anyone who watched.

In particular, we think of one bit. The Wario sketch. A sketch with a pretty funny starting concept (Wario is on trial for killing Mario in a karting accident), and truly piss-poor execution. Weird accents, Fanfiction.net-esque twist, and just generally bare-minimum comedy. When you hear “Mario Kart comedy sketch” and this comes to mind, one can’t help but tremble with fear and experience severe acid reflux.

With that in mind, I think I can comfortably say that SNL has redeemed itself. Its newest attempt at satirising Mario Kart in the show’s most recent episode with Pedro Pascal is a triumph.

Actor Pedro Pascal is best known recently for his portrayal of Joel in HBO’s TV adaptation of The Last of Us. In his first time hosting the long-running sketch comedy show, Pascal addresses the many, many “fancams” that are made of him online in Fancam Assembly, where Pascal plays the principal of a school where students won’t stop making TikTok fancams of him. It rules. As well as that, he did something that many thought was impossible: star in a Mario Kart sketch that wasn’t cringe.

HBO Mario Kart Trailer – SNL

Playing on the lack of narrative in Mario Kart and the deep and enthralling narrative of HBO’s The Last of Us, HBO’s Mario Kart is genuinely a well-executed sketch based on a simple and timely concept. What if something that is traditionally light-hearted and fun was actually serious and gritty? We’ve seen it done before, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done well. Visually, it looks ridiculous yet high quality. The fake review quotes got me. Me likey!

G/O Media may get a commission

Of course, comedy is subjective, and things that make me go “tee hee” might not make you go “hee haw”. You might’ve even thought the Musk Wario sketch and thought it was the funniest thing you’ve ever seen in your life, and that’s okay. Legally, I cannot stop you from feeling this way, though certainly I wish you didn’t.

But me personally? I think the HBO’s Mario Kart sketch knocks it out of the park.

Crawford: Fight With Spence Sells Itself, We Don’t Need To Act Crazy – Boxing News

June 21, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford does not see a reason to act out of character in order to promote his upcoming undisputed showdown with WBC, IBF, WBA champion Errol Spence.

The contest will headline a Showtime Pay-Per-View card on July 20th, from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The fight has been in the works for some time – and finally became a reality when both boxers officially announced that a deal had been reached last month.

Crawford sees no reason act wild and have unnecessary trash-talking between him and Spence.

“I think this fight sells itself,” Crawford said to The MMA Hour. “I don’t think that me nor Errol got to go out and do things that are not in our character just to sell the fight.

“When you look at the fight, you say, ‘OK, you’ve got two undefeated, top-five pound-for-pound fighters in their prime, going head to head for the undisputed welterweight championship of the world. Two action-packed fighters.’ What more do you need?

“You don’t need me going out there, acting all crazy. You don’t need him going out there, acting all crazy just to sell a fight. The fight’s going to sell itself because everybody knows what they’re getting come fight night.”

Crawford has been out of the ring since December, when he knocked out David Avanesyan in the sixth round. For his part, Spence hit the ring last April, when he stopped Yordenis Ugas in ten rounds to unify the WBA, WBC, IBF titles.

Their share two common opponents in Kell Brook and Shawn Porter. Both hold stoppage wins over Brook, although Crawford faced the Sheffield boxer at the tail-end of his career. Spence won a tough twelve round split decision over Porter in 2019. Two years later, Crawford, who also had to deal with a lot of resistance in the fight, stopped Porter in the tenth. Porter retired after the fight.
