Erik ten Hag has blasted the treatment of Manchester United star Casemiro by Premier League referees. The Dutch manager labelled the treatment of the former Real Madrid midfielder as ‘crazy’ as he picked up a fourth yellow card of the season. Ten Hag believes he was forced to replace Casemiro in the second period of United’s win over Luton Town for fear of his charge being unfairly sent off. While the Brazilian has yet to pick up a ban in the Premier League this term, he has earned three yellow cards in his last four league fixtures and eight in his last nine Man United outings in total. The 31-year-old fell to his knees when he was cautioned against the Hatters at Kenilworth Road, as Ten Hag’s side picked up five bookings. Casemiro contined to pick up fouls after David Coote showed him a yellow card and was judged by many to be fortunate not to receive his marching orders. A late lunge on Ross Barkley proved enough for Ten Hag to decide to replace Casemiro with Scott McTominay after 45 minutes. “Even when he is not touching opponents he gets booked,” Ten Hag said. “Often the first moment of the game. “I think it’s crazy and it was so unfair that first booking. That second could have been so that’s why I took him off. He touches an opponent and he gets booked.” Casemiro, meanwhile, has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford after just 18 months at the club. The combative midfielder joined United in a deal worth £70million in August 2022 but was said to be touted to clubs in Saudi Arabia by United football director John Murtough earlier this season However the midfielder recently noted he remained happy at the club. The veteran has enjoyed his time at the club on and off the pitch. Speaking to MBC, Casemiro said: “It’s all amazing, since the first day, I was made to feel very welcome by the club, the players and the fans. “I received so much love – on and off the pitch. It was a unique and magical experience, and I needed such an experience. I am so happy in Manchester with everything the city and the club offer me. “I am happy with that and with helping the club improve and get back to the path of achievements. So yeah, I’m happy to play for Manchester United.” Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
