Man behind OneAmerica’s downtown ‘dad joke’ signboard says CUL8TR

“What does a pun writer use to write his puns?”

The answer, of course, is obvious: “A pun-cil.” At least it probably is to Jonathan Neal of Carmel.

But Neal and the OneAmerica public relations team don’t use a “pun-cil” to write the often-corny “dad jokes” that entertain people passing through downtown Indianapolis.

They use a signboard (actually two) located outside the OneAmerica tower.

Neal, the man who organizes the jokes adorning the signs, announced his departure last Friday as he transitions to a new job at a different company. He had overseen the witty postings since 2019.

In a farewell tweet, Neal posted a photograph of himself in front of the signboard he used “to bring Indy a smile.” The signboard read, “Racing capital of the world? Just add water.”

Some of the previous jokes on the billboard included:

“When the fog lifts, UCLA.”

“Heard a new song about fishing. It had a great hook.”

“The trees with the best bark are dogwoods.”

“Sweet potatoes wear yammies to bed.”

“Confident oceans are 100% shore.”

“What’s the cutest season of the year? Awww-tumn.”

How the pun began

Neal, 38, came to OneAmerica in October 2017. He graduated from Ball State University and The O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University and IUPUI.

The first time Neal saw the OneAmerica signboard was while driving in downtown Indianapolis. He was surprised, since he wasn’t from the city, and thought it was neat. He also encountered it during his onboarding at OneAmerica but had no idea that, eventually, he’d be the one compiling its punny messages.

OneAmerica started using their signboard in 1958 at the Fall Creek headquarters, when the company was known as American United Life. According to the company website, the first messages included an apology for construction inconveniences, company statistics and holiday wishes.

“Before long, OneAmerica’s president at the time, Clarence Jackson, began using the signboard to convey his keen sense of humor,” the website says.

When the company moved downtown in the 1980s, the signboard tradition continued with a new message every week.

‘Self care’ in cookie form: Gourmet bakeries for indulgent discs

Company employees, the public relations team and everyday people are allowed to submit jokes for the signboard, and there is a submission form on OneAmerica’s website. More curator than comedian, Neal’s job was to send the chosen calembour to Cushman & Wakefield with specifics on letters/characters and details helpful for the person changing the sign — a building engineer.

“It has been, and will continue to be, a deep part of the culture at OneAmerica,” Ahmed Ismail, director of media and public relations for OneAmerica, said via email. “The signboard is a unique cultural function with input from both associates and the general public, engaged in promoting community goodwill.”

Neal said it was really about wordplay and headline writing since there are three lines max and 20 characters to work with including spaces and punctuation. As a writer himself, he would take what people submitted and alter it if it was too long. He’d also consider current events and what was going on in the city.

“I think there are people who are just natural jokesters and I would say I’m kind of quick and witty but … before I worked at OneAmerica, I didn’t constantly tell dad jokes,” Neal said.

“So, when I came up with (a joke), it makes me proud … “

He remembered one joke he made in his car while thinking about the mini marathon OneAmerica hosts. The event was being held virtually at the time because of the pandemic: “If you run solo, aren’t you virtually the mini winner?”

However, Neal stressed, making the funny signboard was a group effort.

Often, his colleague who sits across from him would bring him a dad joke and Neal would make it work for the signboard. Other times someone would say something in a meeting and Neal would think, “Oh that’s a good one! That could be turned into a signboard.”

“You know, sometimes they’re corny, sometimes they’re groan worthy, but most of the time, you know, they make you smile and just bring levity, bring some levity to your day,” Neal said.

His favorite moments

His favorite sign board jokes were related to basketball since he was a University of North Carolina Tar Heels basketball fan. One of the jokes from the NCAA tournament, was: “How do basketball players keep cool? They stand by fans.”

He also liked a paronomasia that a colleague — “the dad-joke king” with a quick-witted, dry sense of humor who always has a joke — created during a winter day in January or February: “If you’re cold, sit in the corner. It’s 90 degrees.”

There were a few moments that stood out to Neal as he reflected on his journey at OneAmerica. The first involved his wife and their anniversary.

“I got a really good pun that was sent to me about 6:30 being ‘hands down the best time,'” he recalled. It arrived in the spring and he was able to keep it until his one-year anniversary with his wife. They had been married at 6:30.

“I brought her downtown and showed her the sign and it was special,” he said. “I got to kind of share that moment with her.”

Another moment Neal remembered was when he and the public relations team decided to change their joke-loving signboard to an inspirational one during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“That was a significant time in the history of the signboard since we kind of met the moment and wanted to be a more kind of positive force in downtown during what was a pretty dark time,” Neal said.

The impact of a sign with dad jokes

If Neal could have put anything on the signboard during his last day of work, he said it probably would have been something like, “Working with people like you make it all worthwhile,” or something up about his son Blake.

Twitter users thanked Neal for his work on the sign in response to his announcement, some stating the dad-jokes entertained them or gave them joy.

“We are grateful for Jonathan’s coordination of the OneAmerica signboard and his many other impactful contributions to the company,” Ismail said via email. “Jonathan has taken great care to choose jokes that were relevant, lighthearted and fun, creating a bright spot in our city for many. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

As for the future of the signboard, the fun isn’t going anywhere.

“Hoosiers can rest assured that the signboard jokes will continue to make you smile from ear to ear,” Ismail said, “even if it is because they are just a little too corny.”

Liverpool fans mock Chelsea on social media after Reds hijack deal to sign Moises Caicedo for £111m… and claim Brighton star’s move is ‘hilarious on so many levels’ | Daily Mail Online

August 16, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Liverpool fans have brutally mocked Chelsea fans after the Reds hijacked their deal to sign Brighton star Moises Caicedo.

Chelsea were favourites for the Ecuadorian’s signature before the Reds stunningly hijacked the move in an effort to improve their own midfield reserves. However reports suggest Caicedo is having second thoughts over a possible move to Anfield.

Mail Sport revealed on Friday that Jurgen Klopp’s side had agreed a £111m fee for the midfielder and it’s led to Reds fans poking fun at the expense of their rivals.

‘This is hilarious on so many levels. Us, a team that is scared to get their wallet out, outbidding Chelsea, a team that will spend £100m on a paraplegic as long as he’s under 18… all because they tried to hijack our target. S***housery from FSG and I’m all for it’, one fan wrote on reddit.

Following years of criticism aimed at Liverpool’s owners for not spending big, the reverse seems to be happening during the current off-season, with Dominik Szoboszlai signed from RB Leipzig for £60m, and Alexis Mac Allister acquired from Brighton for £35m.

Liverpool have agreed a £111m fee for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo (pictured)

Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea had been frontrunners to sign Caicedo before Liverpool’s move

‘OH MY GOD!!!!! Caicedo IS A RED!!!!! AM I DREAMIN’??? I AM MADE UP, WHAT A PLAYER WE HAVE GOT!!!! BETTER THAN RICE, HE’S BASICALLY KANTE BUT MORE CREATIVE AN CAN SCORE GOALS!!! WHAT A DAY!!! #FSG HAD TO GO ALL OUT FOR US @LFC FANS AN THEY HAVE!!!!! F####N GET IN!!’, one fan wrote on Twitter.

Another used said: ‘Let’s be clear, £110m is 100% overpaying for a lad with only one full season in the Prem. I also 100% don’t give a f***. It’s not my money and it just feels nice to be able to do this’.

‘Good Morning Reds. Wow! £110m Moises Caicedo Incredible. But he’s perfect for what we need,’ one Twitter used wrote.

‘What a f****** signing this is, a midfield 3 of Mac Allister – Caicedo – Szoboszlai is incredible #LFC,’ added another.

And fans aren’t the only ones chiming in with comments on the deal, but so are some of Liverpool’s former stars.

Ex-defender Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool are ‘desperate’ after agreeing a £110m deal with Brighton but insists the move is ‘great business’ by his former club.

Fans were quick to poke fun at Chelsea getting hijacked via posts onto social media

The 45-year-old posted on Twitter: ‘110M is a big price for Caicedo but Liverpool had to pay big as clubs knew they were desperate.

‘But signing two top young players for 145M & selling two of your older players for 52M is great business!’

The former Liverpool defender was previously frustrated at his past club’s lack of transfer activity that has so far seen their midfield rebuild lacking in numbers before news of Caicedo began to emerge.

All signs posted towards Caicedo joining Chelsea before Liverpool’s late intervention ensured the 21-year-old talent would be swapping Brighton for the north west in a huge blow to Mauricio Pochettino.

Passengers on board flight go crazy for Matildas as win puts them in FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-final | 7NEWS

August 16, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

The Matildas fever has well and truly caught on, and it’s even taking off into the skies.

Journalist Jacqui Felgate captured the view from her seat aboard an Emirates flight on Saturday night, showing almost every single screen tuned in to the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Passengers go crazy for Matildas winning shot while on board flight.

In the footage, passengers are quiet enough to hear a pin drop while waiting for Cortnee Vine to take her shot in the penalty shootout — the 10th shot for the Aussie team.

The cabin then erupts — to the shock of one poor flight attendant — as Vine successfully makes the shot and secures the game for Australia.

The Matildas made Australian sporting history on Saturday night by defeating France in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Vine has been hailed a hero for making the winning shot in the longest shootout in World Cup history.

Excited onlookers watched as Australia and France took 20 shots in total before the game could be decided.

The nation was well and truly on the edge of its seat throughout the game, with play extending from 90 minutes to 120 minutes before the dramatic shootout began.

Matildas Captain Sam Kerr told 7NEWS last night the shootout was strangely not stressful.

“Weirdly it was super calm, because we had such a process,” Kerr said.

“Of course, it’s stressful on the outside. But we all were really calm, and we had so much faith in (goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold).

“We’ve been doing that all week — all month, really. The process we went through just kept us really calm.

“In the most stressful moment it was pretty calm, actually.”

Saturday’s Matildas match has now been officially declared the highest rating TV sport program in a decade and the biggest ever streaming event.

Preliminary data indicates the game reached more than 7.2 million people on Seven and 7plus, with an estimated average audience during the game of 4.17 million.

This does not include out-of-home viewing at clubs, pubs, sporting venues and other similar viewing figures.

It was the No.1 TV program of the year.

Nationally, 3.69 million tuned in to watch on Seven while 472,000 viewers watched on 7plus.

The 472,000 viewers on 7plus makes the Matildas v France game the biggest streaming event ever seen in Australia.

So far, 11.9 million broadcast viewers and 2.3 million users on 7plus have tuned in to watch Seven’s coverage of the World Cup. More than 269 million minutes of content has been watched on 7plus to date.

The team will be back in action on Wednesday night to play against England in the semi-finals.

You can watch the Matildas v England game from 7pm on Wednesday on Seven and 7plus.

Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich medical is DONE with the England captain seen leaving with a smile on his face as he moves one step closer to finalising his £100m transfer from Tottenham – after his flight was cancelled TWICE | Daily Mail Online

August 15, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Harry Kane was spotted leaving his Bayern Munich medical, with the England skipper seen heading into an underground car park having landed in Munich to complete his sensational £100million move.

Kane was videoed through the window of a facility as he made his way to a car park after his medical, with Bayern Munich fans cheering for the player outside.

Fans then captured the moment the player left in a red car, with onlookers shouting for him as he left in the passenger seat of an Audi with a smile on his face.

The striker was then later seen arriving at Bayern Munich’s headquarters to complete his move and sign a contract at the German titans.

Kane and his wife Katie had landed in Munich on Friday night to complete his £100m Bayern transfer after his flight was cancelled twice as negotiations continued between Tottenham and the German giants.

Kane then travelled to the Barmherzige Bruder Hospital in Munich to have his medical and finalise his record move from Spurs.

The 30-year-old striker could even win his first trophy on Saturday with Thomas Tuchel considering thrusting him straight into action against RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup.

There was a palpable sense of relief in Munich amongst senior executives that the on-off transfer drama, the biggest in Bundesliga history, had finally been resolved, with the twists and turns even seeing Kane’s private jet delayed from taking off from Stansted airport at the very last.

New Bayern CEO Jan Christian Dreesen had promised Tuchel he would do everything he could to land the England captain, smashing the German transfer record by £30m to land the biggest English name to play in the Bundesliga since another England captain, Kevin Keegan, joined SV Hamburg from Liverpool in 1977.

Tuchel was nervous earlier in the day, given the news of trouble in London over the exit and some last minute renegotiations. ‘We are working on the highest pressure to sign Harry Kane,’ he said. ‘We are trying to get the captain of the English national team out of England, out of the Premier League. That says it all. It’s a huge deal. But it’s still in the process and nothing is done.’

Later there would be deep breaths of contentment all round the Sabener Strasse training ground when Kane’s jet finally took off.

It was a transfer coup that seemed improbable when Bayern first mooted it back in February but which was given added impetus by Tuchel’s arrival at the club last March.

All summer Dreesen has played what turned out to be a winning hand of poker with a formidable opponent in Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, with two early bids getting short shrift before finally agreeing the £100m figure.

Arguably Bayern have been waiting for a player like Kane for a year, ever since Robert Lewandowski left for Barca.

The home page of Bild, Germany’s most-read paper, shows a picture of MailOnline’s home page with the headline translating as ‘England press bids farewell to Kane!’

Bayern fans are already getting shirts printed with Harry Kane’s name and expected number at the club shop

Their lack of a world class No9 has been obvious since then, despite Eric Choupo-Moting deputising well. The fact that 18-year-old Mathys Tel has been leading the line in pre-season with Choupu-Moting and Thomas Müller injured, tells its own story.

Bayern were lambasted for losing touch with the European elites when they were swatted aside by Manchester City in the Champions League quarter finals and Kane has been bought to ensure they are competitive in that tournament, which they won in 2020.

Kane and his pregnant wife Katie flew in together and the England captain will get to meet his new teammates on Saturday morning, with a pre-game training session at Säbener Strasse, the historic Bayern Munich training ground.

Katie is expected to return after the weekend to bring over their three young children, having already been house hunting earlier this summer in Grünwald, a picturesque suburb close to the training ground.

Amongst German media the Kane move has been labelled one of the biggest ever. Certainly not since Arjen Robben joined from Real Madrid in 2009 has such a huge star joined at the peak of his powers from La Liga or the Premier League.

And for Kane it represents the nearest thing of a guarantee of his first trophy, Bayern having won the past 11 Bundesliga titles. The first one in Kane’s career could even come on Saturday night – if Tuchel throws him straight in against RB Leipzig.

40 Hilarious Memes That Perfectly Sum Up What Being Childfree Is Like

August 15, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Fifty years ago, things were different, people would get married and have children in their twenties, buy a house and seemingly have their life figured out. But times have changed. Today, with an overcrowded planet and a focus on careers, many people in the West choose not to have children or they delay starting a family. More than 1 in 5 US adults don’t want kids.

If your phone’s photo collection is brimming with images of puppies and cats rather than snapshots of little humans, this post will likely strike a chord with you. The subreddit ‘Child-Free Memes‘ and the Instagram page ‘Child Free Memes‘ are all about the pleasures of a life untouched by diapers and tantrums.

So kick back, grab yourself a cup of coffee, and enjoy our new curated selection from these pages. As Samantha from ‘Sex and the City’ once said, this place is for double cappuccinos, not for double strollers.

Together, these pages have gathered a community of over 5k members who share a common viewpoint: life’s purpose doesn’t solely revolve around having children. In the past, waiting to have children was mostly seen among wealthier Americans, especially in big cities on the coasts. Educated women often postponed having babies until their careers were stable, usually in their early thirties. But in the last ten years, as more women from all backgrounds focus on education and work, delaying starting a family has become a common trend among women throughout the United States.

Since 2007, the number of women in their twenties having babies has gone down by 28 percent. Most of the decrease is among unmarried women. Only women in their thirties and forties have been having more babies, but even that has gone down in the last three years. Caitlin Myers, an economist at Middlebury College told ‘The New York Times’: “The story here is about young women, whose births are plummeting”. She added that “the birthrate is falling fastest in places with the greatest job growth — where women have more incentive to wait.”

Those who advocate against having babies even have a name for themselves: anti-natalists. Not only do they encourage families without children but also the gradual fading away of people. While it started long ago in ancient Greece, social media has recently made this idea much more popular. Even though there aren’t many anti-natalists, some of their ideas, especially about the planet, are starting to become more popular. According to the BBC, “Among them are concerns about genetic inheritance, not wanting children to suffer, the concept of consent, and worries about overpopulation and the environment.”

Although anti-natalist groups may use pessimistic language, they don’t appear to pose a violent risk. When discussing extinction, it’s more of a discussion than an actual danger. Most people online don’t talk about hurting anyone.

However, there’s a catch. In less developed countries, large families with numerous children are often the norm. From cultural values to social fairness, there are various reasons why poor families might have many children, and these factors also lead to high birth rates in less wealthy countries. From cultural values to social fairness, let’s look at some main reasons.

In places where children are regarded as blessings according to religious beliefs, having a bigger family is seen as a greater blessing. In many parts of the Global South, couples without children may experience social stigma. Impoverished families, particularly those relying on farming, may have more children to assist with their way of life, including taking care of older family members and younger siblings as they grow up.

In the end, people’s perspectives on having children and the size of their families can be quite complicated. It’s affected by things like culture, money, and society, all which play a role in shaping how people decide about having children.
