The Matildas fever has well and truly caught on, and it’s even taking off into the skies.

Journalist Jacqui Felgate captured the view from her seat aboard an Emirates flight on Saturday night, showing almost every single screen tuned in to the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In the footage, passengers are quiet enough to hear a pin drop while waiting for Cortnee Vine to take her shot in the penalty shootout — the 10th shot for the Aussie team.

The cabin then erupts — to the shock of one poor flight attendant — as Vine successfully makes the shot and secures the game for Australia.

The Matildas made Australian sporting history on Saturday night by defeating France in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Vine has been hailed a hero for making the winning shot in the longest shootout in World Cup history.

Excited onlookers watched as Australia and France took 20 shots in total before the game could be decided.

The nation was well and truly on the edge of its seat throughout the game, with play extending from 90 minutes to 120 minutes before the dramatic shootout began.

Matildas Captain Sam Kerr told 7NEWS last night the shootout was strangely not stressful.

“Weirdly it was super calm, because we had such a process,” Kerr said.

“Of course, it’s stressful on the outside. But we all were really calm, and we had so much faith in (goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold).

“We’ve been doing that all week — all month, really. The process we went through just kept us really calm.

“In the most stressful moment it was pretty calm, actually.”

Saturday’s Matildas match has now been officially declared the highest rating TV sport program in a decade and the biggest ever streaming event.

Preliminary data indicates the game reached more than 7.2 million people on Seven and 7plus, with an estimated average audience during the game of 4.17 million.

This does not include out-of-home viewing at clubs, pubs, sporting venues and other similar viewing figures.

It was the No.1 TV program of the year.

Nationally, 3.69 million tuned in to watch on Seven while 472,000 viewers watched on 7plus.

The 472,000 viewers on 7plus makes the Matildas v France game the biggest streaming event ever seen in Australia.

So far, 11.9 million broadcast viewers and 2.3 million users on 7plus have tuned in to watch Seven’s coverage of the World Cup. More than 269 million minutes of content has been watched on 7plus to date.

The team will be back in action on Wednesday night to play against England in the semi-finals.

You can watch the Matildas v England game from 7pm on Wednesday on Seven and 7plus.
