Banksy auction prank leaves art world in shreds

April 14, 2019 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Banksy has played what could be one of the most audacious pranks in art history, arranging for one of his best-known works to self-destruct after being sold at auction for just over £1m.

Girl With Balloon was the final item in an auction at Sotheby’s in London on Friday night and its sale price equalled the artist’s previous auction record of £1.04m.

Shortly after the hammer came down on the item, however, the canvas began to pass through a shredder installed in the frame.

Banksy posted an image on Instagram of the shredded work dangling from the bottom of the frame with the title “Going, going, gone … ”

A post shared by Banksy (@banksy) on Oct 5, 2018 at 6:45pm PDT

“It appears we just got Banksy-ed,” said Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s senior director and head of contemporary art in Europe.

Sotheby’s said in a statement to the Financial Times: “We have talked with the successful purchaser who was surprised by the story. We are in discussion about next steps.”

The auction house declined to reveal the identity of the buyer.

It is unclear whether the prank will have destroyed or enhanced the value of the work.

The website MyArtBroker.com, which resells Banksy pieces, said Girl with Balloon had enjoyed annual increases in value of about 20% in recent years. “Prices now are regularly exceeding £115,000 for signed authenticated prints,” said its co-founder Joey Syer.

“The auction result will only propel this further and given the media attention this stunt has received, the lucky buyer would see a great return on the £1.02m they paid last night.

“This is now part of art history in its shredded state and we’d estimate Banksy has added at a minimum 50% to its value, possibly as high as being worth £2m plus.”

Girl With Balloon, which was last year voted the UK’s best-loved work of art, first appeared on a wall in Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch, east London. The 2006 gallery version featured spray paint and acrylic on canvas, mounted on a board.

The true identity of the Bristol-born artist has never been officially revealed despite wide speculation.

He rose to fame with graffiti that appeared on buildings across the UK, often marked by deeply satirical undertones.

Two new artworks appeared at the Barbican Centre in central London in September 2017 inspired by an upcoming Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibition.

Announcing the new artworks in a series of Instagram posts, the artist said: “Major new Basquiat show opens at the Barbican – a place that is normally very keen to clean any graffiti from its walls.” The work has since been protected by perspex panes.

One of Banksy’s more elaborate jokes came just over three years ago when he opened Dismaland, a “family theme park unsuitable for small children”, on the seafront at Weston-super-Mare.

The Guardian described it at the time as “sometimes hilarious, sometimes eye-opening and occasionally breathtakingly shocking”.

Nikki Haley: United Nations Laughter Not A Diss But A Sign Of Respect For Trump’s ‘Honesty’

April 14, 2019 by humorouz Leave a Comment

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Wednesday claimed President Donald Trump’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly a day earlier drew laughs because world leaders “loved his honesty” and “respect” him.

Trump’s boastful comment describing his administration as one of the most accomplished in U.S. history sparked laughter not because attendees of the annual summit found the remark ridiculous ― but because it was so “honest,” Haley said during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.”

“They loved how honest he is,” Haley said. “It’s not diplomatic and they find it funny. … When he goes and he is very truthful, they kind of were taken back by it.”

She continued: “All day yesterday, they were falling over themselves to get a picture with him, to talk about how great his speech was. … They love that he’s honest with them and they’ve never seen anything like it, so there’s respect there. I saw that the media was trying to make it something disrespectful. That’s not what it was ― they love to be with him.”

— Fox News (@FoxNews) September 26, 2018

Trump had appeared to be caught off guard on Tuesday when the United Nations General Assembly Hall erupted in laughter just a few minutes into his speech.

“In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country. … So true,” the president said, eliciting several muffled laughs.

“Didn’t expect that reaction but that’s OK,” Trump responded with a chuckle, prompting even more laughter from the audience of world leaders, their aides and the media.

Trump later told reporters that his boastful comment was intended to be funny.

“Oh, it was great,” he said. “Well, that was meant to get some laughter, but it was great.”

Judd Apatow: You shot these movies over
the course of more than ten years.
Judd Apatow: Was that difficult doing the
same character for that long?
Daniel Radcliffe: No. You know, it was probably
around the time of the fourth
Daniel Radcliffe: film that I started to
realize that I was Harry.
Daniel Radcliffe: You know? I mean, which is
something that has
Daniel Radcliffe: been quite widely
discussed.
Judd Apatow: I’m sorry, I don’t
understand.
Judd Apatow: You are Harry or you
played Harry?
Daniel Radcliffe: No, I am…I am Harry. I thought I
was an actor playing a
Daniel Radcliffe: wizard, but really I was a
wizard playing an actor.
Daniel Radcliffe: I go from my Harry life, when
I am me, and then I walk out of
Daniel Radcliffe: the room and then I am Dan,
the actor. Dan is a fantastic
Daniel Radcliffe: character, who I’ve really
enjoyed playing him. This
Daniel Radcliffe: kind of split reality which I
live on, which we all live
Daniel Radcliffe: on, you know, it was a
revelation when I discovered
Daniel Radcliffe: that’s how the world works.
Judd Apatow: So when you’re not Dan, you
actually are fighting evil spirits?
Daniel Radcliffe: Well, no, I’ve fought them
and, now, they’re dead.
Daniel Radcliffe: They’re dead.
I’ve don’t that.
Judd Apatow: So what does Harry do now
that he’s defeated everybody?
Daniel Radcliffe: Kind of chills out a lot.
Yeah. And, you know, I talk to women.
Daniel Radcliffe: Tell them that I’m Harry and
see where that gets me.
Daniel Radcliffe: The thing that I am proudest of
is Quidditch. I’ve spoken to
Daniel Radcliffe: at least two or three
professional Quidditch
Daniel Radcliffe: players who think kind of any
team would be lucky to have
Daniel Radcliffe: me at this point.
Judd Apatow: I thought Quidditch was a
fabrication from the book,
Judd Apatow: that it wasn’t a real game.
Daniel Radcliffe: I beg your pardon? You know,
this is actually kind of what I
Daniel Radcliffe: hate about America. I love
being here, but what I
Daniel Radcliffe: absolutely hate is your
complete lack of appreciation
Daniel Radcliffe: for British Sports. Cricket.
It’s too complicated. It’s
Daniel Radcliffe: too slow. It’s too boring.
It’s not! Would you like to
Daniel Radcliffe: see a scar that I have from
playing Quidditch?
Daniel Radcliffe: You seemed so skeptical
earlier.
Judd Apatow: I really don’t.
Daniel Radcliffe: Yep, I’m going to
show you.
Judd Apatow: Judd: I really don’t want
to see it.
Daniel Radcliffe: Daniel: Well, you’re seeing it now.
You see? There, that thing.
Judd Apatow: Judd: Okay, put your
pants on.
Daniel Radcliffe: Daniel: That’s broom burn, man.
Judd Apatow: Judd: I don’t need to see the broom
burn. Just put your pants on.
Daniel Radcliffe: Daniel: Do you know how much Tiger
Balm I’ve got through every
Daniel Radcliffe: Daniel: day on this stuff?
This is unbelievable.

Most people think that technology is for young people, but nobody told Kimiko Nishimoto that. She’s an 89-year-old Japanese grandma who’s been snapping and editing her own pictures for the last 17 years, and as you can see below, her style is certainly unique!

She didn’t get into photography until she was 72 years old. Her son was teaching a beginner’s course and so she decided to enroll, unaware that she was about to awake a passion and a talent she never even knew she had. She instantly fell in love with photography and set about snapping various quirky and comical self-portraits. She had her first solo exhibition ten years later, at a local museum in her home town of Kumamoto, and now she’s about to have her work exhibited at Tokyo’s Epson epsite imaging gallery. Titled “Asobokane” – meaning “let’s play” – the exhibition will feature previously unseen work from the octogenarian artist, so if you happen to be in Tokyo between December 15, 2017 and January 18, 2018 then be sure to check it out. Think you’re too old to try something new? Think again.

People Are Going Crazy for Kerrygold Butter. We Found out Why. | Taste of Home

April 13, 2019 by humorouz Leave a Comment

If you love butter (and who doesn’t?), you’ve probably noticed that more and more people are singing the praises of Kerrygold. They use it in everything from baked goods to sauces to creamy mac and cheese. When it comes to the best ingredients for home cooking and baking, my fellow Field Editors know their stuff. I asked them to offer some insight into why people can’t seem to get enough of Kerrygold, which the company says can be found “at most major retailers throughout the U.S. and Canada.”

It’s Made from Grass-Fed Cows’ Milk

Working with a cooperative of small-scale dairy farmers across Ireland, Kerrygold uses milk from cows that are nearly totally grass fed and are never treated with antibiotics or growth hormones. The milk is churned into all-natural butter that seems to be flavored with fresh air from the Irish countryside. Lisa Allen from Joppa, Alabama, says Kerrygold is “the best-tasting butter I have found.”

In fact, all the Field Editors I talked with agree. Bonnie Hawkins from Elkhorn, Wisconsin, first tasted Kerrygold on a trip to Ireland and was thrilled when it became available on this side of the pond. She always has plenty on hand for her holiday baking. Ann Sheehy of Lawrence, Massachusetts, uses it in her French butter omelets, and Cindy Worth of Lapwai, Idaho, loves it as the crucial ingredient for her homemade croissants.

It Creates Flakier Pie Crusts

Bakers and pie enthusiasts alike desire a flaky pie crust to perfectly complement the filling it holds. Elizabeth Bramkamp from Gig Harbor, Washington, says pie crusts and pastries are flakier when made with Kerrygold butter, thanks to the lower water content. Teri Rasey of Cadillac, Michigan, tells me the butter gives a beautiful melt-in-your-mouth texture to other baked goods, too, like shortbread and scones.

It’s Just So Creamy

The higher amount of butterfat in Kerrygold makes it velvety and more, well, buttery than other butters. Once she began using the brand in her mashed potatoes, Jane Zirbser from Mullica Hill, New Jersey, says, “They’ve never tasted so rich and creamy.” And Lisa Allen uses only Kerrygold in her homemade buttercream frosting.

In a nutshell, Kerrygold is prized by home cooks for the perfect texture it brings to baked goods and the rich flavor it brings to recipes both sweet and savory. Now it’s your turn. Think you’ll go crazy for Kerrygold?
