Home Sweet Mahomes: East Texas’ Whitehouse Goes Chiefs Crazy Ahead of the Super Bowl

The East Texas town of Whitehouse is about 10 miles south of Tyler, but in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, it is looking more like a suburb of Kansas City. The town is so draped in red and gold colors you might think the best barbecue in town is at Arthur Bryant’s, not Ribmasters or Katie’s Old Fashion BBQ.

This traditional Dallas Cowboys stronghold has replaced the blue star with the Chiefs’ arrowhead logo because reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes II—whose team plays for a repeat title on Sunday in Tampa, Florida—found his love for football as a member of the Whitehouse High School Wildcats.

“Everybody dresses up their places in honor of our hometown hero,” says Gloria Munoz, co-owner of Montez Creekside Kitchen in Whitehouse. One of the most popular items on the menu is the Mahomes Hot Dog, made with pulled pork, fried egg, jalapeño, pickle, and fried onions. It might sell out on Friday, which has been designated as “Chiefs Day” in the town that has a population of about 8,000.

The adulation starts on a sign leading into town, which says “We (Heart) Our Patrick.” The love is all around for the new king of fling.

“In Whitehouse everybody knows everybody,” Munoz says. “When the Chiefs play, we’re cheering for one of our own.”

The Whitehouse Flower and Co., whose “Patrick Is Mahomie” front window design was shown on ESPN and other stations last year, has come up with a new slogan—“Home Sweet Mahomes”—in advance of this year’s Super Bowl, which pits the Chiefs against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“It was a little crazier last year because it was Mahomes’ first Super Bowl,” says artist Natalie Buckley, who designed a silhouette of No. 15 in the back of the flower shop. “But the orders for new signs have picked up in the last week.”

Mahomes plays for Kansas City, but also represents Whitehouse, where his mother, Randi, who graduated from nearby Troup High School, moved her family in 2005. Patrick’s father, Pat Mahomes, a former major league baseball pitcher from Lindale, and Randi divorced when Patrick was 10 and brother Jackson was 5. But both parents have been active in their kids’ lives and remain friendly.

“Patrick was raised right,” says Mundo Villapudua, whose son Esteban knew Mahomes in high school. “It’s always ‘Yes, sir’ and ‘Yes, ma’am.’” Mahomes’ fiancée, Brittany Mathews, a former Whitehouse cheerleader, has been his girlfriend since the 10th grade. “Patrick hasn’t gotten too big for this little town,” Villapudua says.

Mahomes returns to East Texas for a couple months every year after football season to see friends and family and workout at the APEC training center in Tyler. He golfs at the Hollytree Country Club, where his mother has worked as an event planner for 15 years. “Folks here try to give him his space, that respect, but he’s such a big star,” Villapudua says. “Sometimes there’s a fuss, but he’s so good to people.”

It seemed unlikely that Smith County would ever produce another NFL legend as big as Earl Campbell, who won a Heisman Trophy playing for the University of Texas Longhorns, then brought “Love Ya Blue” frenzy to Houston Oilers fans in the late 1970s. But the accomplishments of “The Tyler Rose,” a first-ballot NFL Hall of Famer, could eventually be overshadowed by “The Whitehouse Cannon.” Mahomes’ arm strength and accuracy are two primary reasons Kansas City ended a 50-year Super Bowl drought by beating San Francisco 31- 20 in last year’s finale.

At age 25, the lightly recruited former Wildcats quarterback has set passing records during his time at Texas Tech, won the NFL Most Valuable Player award, and led his team to two Super Bowls. But Mahomes is just getting started, as evidenced by the contract he recently signed that will pay him up to $503 million over 10 years to remain a Chief.

And to think he almost chose to follow his father into Major League Baseball, with his 93 mph fastball providing a new definition of East Texas heat. Mahomes didn’t even play quarterback until his junior year of high school, when he switched from defensive back. By that time, Brady had already won three Super Bowls with New England.

Going for his seventh Super Bowl win on Sunday, the 43-year-old Brady is known as the GOAT (greatest of all time) at quarterback. But the people of Whitehouse will be cheering for the baby goat. As the signs on Main Street announce in red and gold, Patrick is their homie.

Jimmy Carr condemned for ‘truly disturbing’ joke about travellers in Netflix special | The Independent

May 7, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Jimmy Carr has been criticised for a joke he made in his most recent Netflix comedy special about travellers.

In a of the stand-up show His Dark Material– which arrived on Netflix on Christmas Day – the comedian tells the audience: “Strap in everyone, you ready?”

“When people talk about the Holocaust,” he continues, “they talk about the tragedy and horror of six million Jewish lives being lost to the Nazi war machine. But they never mention the thousands of gypsies that were killed by the Nazis.”

“No one ever talks about that because no one wants to talk,” he says, “about the positives.”

In the caption alongside the clip, Facebook user Alfie Best wrote: “Really goes to show what some people think. I have one thing to say thank you for sharing your views on gypsies as this spreads hate.

“And it shows the world the abundance of abuse we take as gypsy people, glad the audience found it funny.”

Best’s post has been shared many times on Twitter, with The Traveller Movement’s official account posting: “This is truly disturbing and goes way beyond humour. We need all your support in calling this out.”

The group has also asked Netflix to remove the special from its platform.

“I’m so sorry this happened to you,” one commenter wrote. “Your communities receive so much vile abuse, bullying and stereotyping. Jimmy Carr should be ashamed of himself.”

“Outrageous that this was broadcast,” added another.

A third wrote: “Jimmy Carr crash! Never found this man funny, edgy or remotely interesting. And now just downright offensive to add to his woes.”

The Independent has contacted Carr and Netflix for comment.

Last April, Carr had predicted that he would “probably get cancelled” when he returned to doing comedy gigs after the easing of lockdown.

Carr has drawn criticism many times over the years for his controversial jokes, which have mocked targets including people with Down’s Syndrome, amputee veterans and people with dwarfism.

Appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show, Carr told the host: “Not being able to go out there and do what we normally do has been a challenge. They’re talking about June 21st – I’ve got gigs booked in from June 21st… god willing, that would be a return to normality…”

He added: “I think I’ll probably get cancelled, I’ll be a bit giddy and over excited. I’m a dab hand at it now.”

Hilarious moment loved-up bear cuddles up to a STATUE in Wyoming backyard  | Daily Mail Online

May 7, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

A loved-up bear thought it had found its soulmate as it cuddled and kissed a ‘female’ – only to be given the cold shoulder when it turned out to be a statue.

Doug Yarrow, 75, was at home near Jackson Hole, Wyoming, when he spotted a black bear wandering around his grounds, taking a quick dip in his pond, and even trying to mate with his statue.

Hilarious footage sees the dopey bear trying to bond with what it thought was its new mate, only to be left disappointed by ‘her’ lack of response.

The clip shows the ‘love machine’ stand on its back legs and begin amorously rubbing its head and face against the polished metal sculpture, which has sat in Mr Yarrow’s backyard for around a year.

Doug Yarrow, 75, was at home near Jackson Hole, Wyoming, when he spotted a black bear wandering around his grounds, and trying to mate with his statue (pictured)

Footage shows the ‘love machine’ stand on its back legs and begin amorously rubbing its head and face against the polished sculpture, which has sat in Mr Yarrow’s yard for around a year

The bear wraps its paws around the statue, nicknamed ‘The Bearoness’, and gives it a long, loving embrace before nuzzling into its chin and kissing it.

Doug, a retired software company owner, said: ‘The bear was definitely looking for a new mate. He was really into rubbing all over her.

‘For all his efforts all he got was the cold shoulder which is why I couldn’t help but start laughing.

‘I just happened to walk over to the window that morning and saw the bear in the yard. It was a really happy accident.

‘It all started with the bear playing with the pump in my pond and was spraying it all over himself which scared him.

‘When he came back down from a tree, he made a beeline for the statue.

Hilarious footage sees a dopey black bear attempting to bond with what it thought was its new mate, only to be left disappointed as it was really a metal bear statue

Mr Yarrow’s (pictured) video attracted hoards of attention online from commenters who the black bear ‘a big love machine’ and joked that the statue had been ‘playing hard to get’

‘The sculpture has been in our yard for about a year or so now. It has definitely attracted more bears in the autumn but none have ever paid it this much close attention.’

Mr Yarrow said living around a mile from Grand Teton National Park, they get a lot of wildlife in their yard and he has a trail cam set up to spot any exciting encounters.

His video attracted hoards of attention online from commenters who the black bear ‘a big love machine’ and joked that the statue had been ‘playing hard to get’.

One person said: ‘He is a big love machine.’

Another wrote: ‘He’s just a love machine.’

A third penned: ‘Talk about a cold shoulder. Must not be her type.’

And a fourth joked: ‘She’s playing hard to get!’

Bears are not the only animal to believe statues are real, as a dopey dog mistook a metal statue for a human in Somerset and tried to play fetch with it.

In July last year, Chester, a ten-year-old springer spaniel, dropped his tennis ball at the feet of a fisherman statue in Watchet Harbour, Somerset.

He patiently waited for the statue, called Yankee Jack, to throw the ball for him in footage filmed on July 14.

For a full 90 seconds, Chester tries to get the statue to throw the ball, but fails to have any luck with the metal man.

His owner Debby Taylor, 54, from Crewe, Cheshire, was stunned to see Chester falling for the trick – and not for the first time either.

She said Chester has previously mistaken a wooden statue for a human, adding that he is ‘a lovely dog but so dopey’.

Emotional Luis Diaz tears up after “joke” performance in Liverpool’s epic comeback – Mirror Online

May 6, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Luis Diaz was Liverpool’s gamechanger as the Reds survived a first-half onslaught to reach the Champions League final.

And the Colombian was reduced to tears in the post-match celebrations.

Holding a 2-0 lead from the Anfield first leg, the Reds were stunned by a vibrant performance from Unai Emery’s side in the first half in Spain, where the La Liga side shocked their visitors within three minutes when Boulaye Dia fired home amid defensive disarray.

Liverpool simply couldn’t get going in the match, and former Arsenal man Francis Coquelin added a second to completely cancel out the first leg lead shortly before half-time.

Jurgen Klopp’s response was to send on Diaz at half-time to replace Diogo Jota, and the game turned as the former Porto man linked up with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane impressively in attack.

Fabinho drove a shot through home goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli to pull one back, before Diaz nodded home a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross to level matters on the night.

Sadio Mane would later add a third to wrap up a 3-2 victory on the night for the Reds.

Liverpool’s players celebrated their victory with a sense of relief after the match, and cameras caught Diaz seemingly tearing up as he reacted to reaching his first Champions League final.

On BT Sport’s coverage, presenter Jake Humphrey labelled Diaz’s display “a joke”, with pundit Peter Crouch adding: “He changed the game, he was fantastic. The moment he came on, he was getting at players. A complete game changer.”

Reds full-back Alexander-Arnold reflected on the win, saying: “We never tend to make these Champions League semis easy for ourselves, no matter if we’re home or away, Barca and now here. It’s difficult, very difficult.

“Obviously we came here, they played very well in that first half, we regrouped at half time and grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and done what we needed to do.

Image:

BT Sport)

“It was difficult for us first half, we expected it but sometimes you can’t control the game how you want to. They started well, scored early doors which we didn’t want, but we got the game done and booked our ticket to Paris.”

On Liverpool’s half-time team talk, he added: “We just needed to play how we wanted to play. We didn’t play football in that first half, never picked up any of the first or second balls at all, then they played how they wanted to and we allowed that.

“It was difficult, second half we played how we needed to, controlled the game a lot better and one bad half over the two legs, we can concede that as long as we got the job done and that’s what we did today.”
