‘Shark Week’ is too white and too male, study finds — and the mockery that ensues is bloody hilarious

December 15, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

“Shark Week” — that beloved TV special that sinks its teeth into everything shark-related each summer — has joined the ever-growing conga line of familiar things woke folks insist are actually racist and sexist.

What are the details?

The Washington Post on Monday highlighted a recent Public Library of Science study claiming that “Shark Week,” among other things, “overwhelmingly featured white men as experts — including several with the same name.”

David Shiffman — a conservationist at Arizona State University and co-author of the study — told the Post that Discovery’s “Shark Week” indeed included more white experts and commentators named Mike than women.

“When there are hundreds of people of color interested who work in this field, [and] when my field is more than half women, maybe it’s not an accident any more that they’re only featuring white men,” Shiffman added to the paper.

Lisa Whitenack, a biology professor at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., led the research team behind the study, and its members examined hundreds of “Shark Week” episodes from 1988 through 2020 to come up with their findings, the Post said.

The paper said Discovery didn’t respond to its request for comment on the study — although the channel did tell WBTS in Boston after preliminary findings came to light in 2021 that it wouldn’t comment on a study “that has yet to pass any scientific approvals.”

Whitenack, however, told the Post the study has since undergone a scientific review.

Not the first time

Scientists and TV critics bit down hard on “Shark Week” in 2020, the paper said, for featuring six white men out of eight named experts. Whitenack told the Post her team’s study — which also commenced in 2020 — found that throughout almost all of the history of “Shark Week,” over 90% of the 229 experts were white and about 78% were men.

The year of the criticism isn’t so surprising, as readers of TheBlaze also may remember that 2020 saw a massive race-related reckoning amid rioting sparked by George Floyd’s death, including changes in product imaging and branding:

What did folks have to say about the ‘Shark Week’ findings?

Mike Rowe of “Dirty Jobs” posted a rather funny reaction on Facebook Wednesday: “Good Morning. As a white male named Mike who hosted ‘Shark Week’ more than once, this headline caught my eye in The Washington Post [“‘Shark Week’ lacks diversity, overrepresents men named Mike, study finds”] … I suspect I might be asked to respond specifically to this headline. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please leave them in the comments below. Unless of course, you’re a white guy named Mike. I think we’ve all heard quite enough from you…”

In addition, one might assume that those commenting on the Post’s story would applaud the study, but a quick look at the comments says otherwise:

  • “Amazing research,” one commenter wrote. “I’m hoping this woman now tries to cancel the Great White Shark as a clearly racist shark and sues Steven Spielberg for clearly emphasizing only Great Whites in his racist movie “Jaws.'”
  • “Discovery has not highlighted a single researcher who identifies as a shark, nor a shark who identifies as a researcher. Disgraceful!” another commenter said.
  • “Like all of wokeness, it’s narcissistic performance art by neurotic white people, for neurotic white people,” another commenter observed.
  • “Meth is bad,” another commenter quipped.
  • “I saw this headline being dunked on and immediately thought, ‘Please don’t let this be the Post.’ Is this a joke article, and I’m not seeing it??” another commenter wondered.
  • “This is basically an Onion article,” another commenter noted. “The left just keeps creating parody of itself. Another example of how the progressive demand for racism outstrips actual supply.”
  • “You have GOT to be kidding!” another commenter exclaimed. “This is an early April Fools prank, right? If not, pass the poisoned Kool-Aid, and let’s just end it all now.”
  • “Why is only the WHITE shark called ‘great’?????” another commenter asked. “The ocean — so damn racist.”

The England vs France referee was labelled “a joke” by Gary Neville with heavy criticism coming in for Brazilian official Wilton Sampaio.

The Three Lions’ first gripe came during the first half in the build-up to the opening World Cup quarter-final goal for Les Bleus.

Bukayo Saka protested for a foul after Dayot Upamecano’s challenge, but play continued, with Aurélien Tchouaméni soon breaking the deadlock.

Sampaio did award two penalties for England, the second of which following a VAR review.

The first spot kick was dispatched by Kane before a second was blazed high over the bar, proving crucial as England were eliminated.

Olivier Giroud proved the match-winner, putting the French back in front after Kane’s equaliser, planting a powerful header past Jordan Pickford following a delightful ball by Antoine Griezmann.

But the defeat comes with extensive criticism for Sampaio, with Neville tweeting: “Ref is a joke!”

He continued on ITV after the game: “I thought he had an absolute nightmare, a joke of a referee. He was just a bad referee, rank bad.”

While Gary Lineker commented: “One of these days, just once, we might get a decision in our favour.”

The criticism extended beyond former England players, with YouTuber KSI adding: “The referee has been terrible.”

Football commentator Ian Dark was especially scathing: “How did Fifa come up with that ref for a big quarter final ? He was clearly way out of his depth.”

While presenter Dan Walker said: “Can we sub the ref? He’s having a shocker!!!”

Former F1 driver Damon Hill said: “Well done guys England. You gave it everything. Had some questionable Ref decisions. But that’s how it goes. Up against a very tough team.”

And former England rugby international Andy Goode said: “How bad is this ref, he’s a disgrace on the biggest stage.”

Former US international and ESPN pundit Taylor Twellman said: “Did this ref win a competition to do this game?!”

And comedian Jack Whitehall detailed how the referee was merely part of a familiar story for England suffering at a tournament: “That ticked every box of England misery bingo. Joke of a ref, missed pen, winning goal from a player that was a donkey in the prem. #NotComingHome.”

TikToker tampil mohon maaf, video ‘prank’ tekup kek hanya lakonan

December 14, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Joan Laporta SLAMS Bayern Munich after Julian Nagelsmann called Barca’s transfer strategy ‘crazy’ | Daily Mail Online

December 13, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

‘They distort reality’: Barcelona chief Joan Laporta SLAMS Bayern Munich and suggests they ‘look at their bank account’ for the £42.5m he paid them for Robert Lewandowski – after Julian Nagelsmann blasted his ‘crazy’ transfer strategy

Barcelona chief Joan Laporta has hit back at Bayern Munich after their head coach Julian Nagelsmann took a swipe at their ‘crazy’ spending – telling the Bundesliga side to ‘look at their own bank account’.

The two clubs have been engaged in a war of words over Robert Lewandowski after Barcelona finally snapped him up for £42.5million this summer after eight seasons with Bayern and netting 344 goals – with the Polish star forcing his exit after telling the club his ‘story was over’.

Fans have been shocked that Barca have managed to bring in Lewandowski – as well as four other signings – despite facing cripppling financial difficulties. The club have had to sell their merchandising arm and part of their TV rights to fund deals for Raphinha, Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen.

Barcelona chief Joan Laporta has hit back at Bayern Munich and boss Julian Nagelsmann after he questioned the club’s ‘crazy’ transfer strategy

In quotes carried by the Mirror, Barcelona President Joan Laporta said: ‘I would tell [Bayern] to look at their checking account, that important money has come in because of Lewandowski.

‘What they do is distort reality. They have not calibrated the strength of Barça. To those who are surprised, I say that we are very awake.

‘We are back on the market. The weight, strength and value of an entity with more than 122 years of history is a lot.’

Robert Lewandowski joined Barcelona from Bayern for £42.5million earlier this summer

His comments came after Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann voiced his concerns about the Catalan club’s transfer strategy. He said: ‘[Barca] is the only club in the world that have no money, but then buy all the players they want.

‘I don’t know how they do it. It’s a bit strange, a bit crazy. They got a lot of new players, not only Robert.’

A falling out between Nagelsmann and Lewandowski is thought to be one reason behind the striker’s transfer.

Earlier this summer the player declared his ‘story was over’ at Bayern as he attempted to force through a transfer.

‘My era at Bayern is over,’ Lewandowski told reporters while on international duty with Poland.

‘I don’t see any possibility to continue playing for this club anymore.

Lewandowski clashed with Nagelsmann before deciding to push through his exit from Bayern

‘Bayern’s a serious club and I believe they won’t keep me, I don’t want to play there anymore. A transfer is the best solution. I hope they don’t stop me.’

Lewandowski is also believed to have rowed with Nagelsmann over training ground instructions. The German coach is said to have advised him what position to take up for crosses, to which the Pole reportedly replied: ‘I’ve scored 41 goals in a season… not you!’

Despite facing debts of £1bn, Barca do appear to be on track to register their expensive new signings after selling a portion of their TV rights, although they may still have to sell Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay.

However, Laporta stressed on Friday that the club were happy to keep De Jong – who has ben linked with Manchester United – so long as he takes a pay cut.
