Kathy Najimy Explains Mary Sanderson’s Updated Crooked Smile

It’s only been two days since Disney+ released Hocus Pocus 2, and fans are already talking about how the film has evolved since the 1993 original cult classic. But Kathy Najimy wants fans to know that a slight change in her character Mary Sanderson’s iconic crooked smile isn’t an Easter egg or character development, so much as it was a choice of ease.
Eagle-eyed fans noticed that Mary’s side smile — which the comedienne improvised during Hocus Pocus — is on the opposite side in Hocus Pocus 2. “It’s on the other side mainly because it’s so hard for me to do it on the side I did it on 30 years ago,” Najimy explained to Entertainment Weekly.
Najimy knows the fans are going wild trying to figure out why the switch-a-roo happened. “I’m sure the fans are going to go into deep detail about why it’s on the other side. It’s just something I came up with the first week. This is a big comedy, so you don’t have to be subtle or have a 40-page Shakespearean backstory.”
But for fans who are sticklers for continuity, Najimy has a canonical explanation as to why her smirk has switched sides: “We can justify it because there’s a scene at the beginning where Winnie slaps me, and my mouth goes to the other side, and then she slaps me again and it goes to the other side, and sticks.” The scene features a younger Mary (played by Nina Kitchen) with her smile dipping on the right side. After a swift smack from a young Winifred (played by Taylor Paige), it switches to the left.
Najimy returned along Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker for the highly anticipated sequel, which dropped on Disney+ September 30. So far, it seems like fans have been satisfied with the sequel, which sees a trio of high schoolers light the infamous Black Candle, bringing the Sanderson Sisters back to Salem once again.
And for those who are looking for tie-ins and Easter eggs in the sequel, director Anne Fletcher made sure to “weave in all of the people that the fans loved, and when you sat back with all the ingredients and story,” so there are bound to be more that pop up as fans inevitably watch Hocus Pocus 2 300 times or so.

Smile for the camera! Incredible moment Nelson the great white shark shows off his dagger-sharp teeth as he chases a lure through the water
Incredible images from the deep show a great white shark named Nelson flashing the camera a toothy smile as he stalks a lure just under the ocean’s surface.
One particularly gripping image shows the deadly shark with its jaw open displaying its 300 dagger-sharp teeth chasing a lure through the water.
Another stirring photo shows the sharks strength as it thrashes through the water in pursuit of the lure creating bubbles and waves all around.
The sharks were captured on underwater camera near Guadalupe Island, Mexico, off the coast of Baja California and some 250 miles south of San Diego and the southern border.
These death-defying images were taken by shark photographer Euan Rannachan, who spends much of his time diving with the Be A Shark Team off Guadalupe Island in Mexico.
‘In this series of photos and video you can see a shark named Nelson making his way straight up towards me and at the last second ducking down under the surface of the water,’ said Euan.
‘This shows off Nelson doing the jaws pose for me.

‘The island is a migration path of a lot of different kinds of seals. With the very deep sides the island is the perfect place for the sharks to do their vertical attacks.
‘It was a typical day in the cage. This day happened to be saturated with sharks and we had lots of fish to check out.
‘Nelson is a great white shark and they have extra senses than us. They can even feel our heartbeats in the cage.
‘They can feel electrical impulses through the water from quite a ways away. However, I was very close, under ten feet from Nelson.

‘I love photographing sharks because it’s different each time. Some days that’s because of the sharks around and other days it’s because of the condition of the water we are shooting in.
‘I think about the same thing each time something exciting happens around the cage. I hope I got whatever happened in focus, and I pray none of my cameras are full or out of battery.’
Jaws was the famous 1975 summer blockbuster about a man-eating shark which taught audiences to fear going into the water.
It featured an iconic poster of an oversized great white shark emerging from the deep with its mouth agape as a young woman swam above it at the water’s surface.
This shot captures Nelson doing the iconic Jaws pose, in which a great white shark lunges to the surface with its mouth agape and its dagger-like teeth protruding from its mouth in a nightmare for every ocean swimmer
Great white sharks can have as many as 300 razor-sharp teeth in their mouths, which Nelson amply demonstrates as he prepares to chomp on the lure
Euan managed to capture Nelson making a similar pose, although the similarities end there as the dimensions of the shark in the Jaws poster are unrealistic.
And, although they are known to hunt seals in such a fashion, fully breaching the water at tremendous speeds, they have never been known to strike a human this way.
Guadalupe Island became known for its great white sharks in 2000 after America’s Shark Boat first visited and discovered great white sharks there.
The average Guadalupe Island white shark grows to 15 feet – although they can exceed 20 feet – and weigh up to 5,000 pounds. They can swim at 15 miles per hour, but they have never attack a human in these waters.

The US has seen 34 shark attacks so far in 2022 but none have been fatal – although six people have died world wide from shark attacks this year.
The Florida Museum shows a trend of increasing shark attacks since the 1980s. Cleaner coastal waters is thought to be partly responsible, with increased fish life attracting larger predators.
‘Requiem’ sharks are responsible for over a third of shark attacks in Florida, with the more fearsome tiger and great white sharks vastly down the list.

Ozzy Osbourne says he’s ‘deeply nervous’ about reality TV return after MTV show sent family ‘crazy’ | Daily Mail Online
The Black Sabbath rocker, 74, spoke out about the BBC commissioning a series documenting their ‘new life back in the UK’, the birth of Kelly’s baby boy and Sharon’s 70th birthday – 17 years after The Osbournes ended.
Ozzy says the show, which chartered the start of reality TV shows as we know them, saw his ‘children get messed up’ and turn to drugs as a way of coping with the fame.
Concerns: Ozzy Osbourne is ‘deeply nervous’ about filming a reality TV comeback after the family’s hit MTV show sent the family ‘crazy’
Speaking on his SiriusXM channel, Ozzy said: ‘I don’t know how The Kardashians have done it for so long. It sent us crazy at the end.
‘I am not sorry I did it, but after three or four years I said, “Do you know what, we’re going to lose somebody because it is getting too crazy”.
‘There is rock and roll fame, which is pretty intense, but that Osbourne level was just unbelievable. The kids paid for it. They all ended up doing drugs. Jack got clean and sober on that show, Kelly messed up on that show, I was messed up and Sharon got cancer.’
Worried: Ozzy says the show, which chartered the start of reality TV shows as we know them, saw his ‘children get messed up’ and turn to drugs as a way of coping with the fame
The reality TV show first aired on MTV in March 2002 and followed the eccentric home life of Black Sabbath singer Ozzy and his family – with their eldest daughter Aimee deciding not to take part in the show.
During his chat on the radio, Ozzy revealed the show further catapulted his fame and compared it to Beatlemania where whole restaurants of people would scream at him if he arrived for a meal.
Of the new prospect with the BBC, the musician admitted he is very hesitant but wife Sharon, 70, is the boss.

Putting her foot in it: Sharon was pictured leaving Claridges hotel on Friday night, after revealing Kelly’s son’s name on live tv – which her daughter was not happy about
Whoops: Kelly issued a furious statement about sharing information she wasn’t ready to reveal yet after her mother Sharon told the world her grandson’s name was Sydney
He said: ‘My wife sort of dropped something on me that the BBC are doing The Osbournes returning to England. I said, “We are not having all that again”. But she said it is only for a bit.
‘It gave Sharon a new career. She has become the television person in our family.’
The Osbournes was the first show of its kind and covered major events throughout the family’s lives such as Sharon battle with cancer, Ozzy’s near death accident and when Kelly’s friend Robert came to live with them after his mother’s death.
History: The Osbournes covered major events throughout the family’s lives such as Sharon battle with cancer, Ozzy’s accident and when Kelly’s friend Robert came to live with them
The series became known for its wild events as Ozzy’s calling of ‘Sharon!’ became a household catchphrase and his confusion over a ringing telephone became iconic.
Going on to film for a total of four season and 52 episodes, the programme scooped the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Program in 2002.
Their move to a quaint Buckinghamshire village comes as Ozzy claimed ‘everything’s f****** ridiculous’ Stateside and highlighted the country’s history of school shootings.
He told The Observer: ‘I’m fed up with people getting killed every day. God knows how many people have been shot in school shootings. And there was that mass shooting in Vegas at that concert… It’s f*****g crazy.’
Despite California’s Forest Lawn cemetery being the favoured burial ground by celebrities such as Paul Walker, Brittany Murphy and Bette Davis, Ozzy made it crystal clear that he doesn’t want to follow suit.
He continued: ‘I’m English. I want to be back. But, saying that, if my wife said we’ve got to go and live in Timbuktu, I’ll go. But, no, it’s just time for me to come home.’
