115 Soul-Healing Rescue Pet Pics To Make You Smile (November Edition)

February 5, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Contrary to popular belief, instead of cats and dogs, the first American animal activists focused mostly on horses, working tirelessly to protect the welfare of animals who were a key mode of transportation.

Then, on April 14, 1869, Caroline Earle White and a group of women established what’s now considered the first American animal shelter, in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. In addition to horses, its mission expanded “to provide as soon as possible, a refuge for lost and homeless dogs, where they could be kept until homes could be found for them, or they be otherwise disposed of.”

It marked a turning point. The notion of a shelter, or even a municipal pound, as a place where you could go and find a pet, according to historian Bernie Unti, really took hold in the latter part of the 19th century and then has grown steadily ever since.

So to celebrate how far we’ve come, we at Bored Panda are continuing our monthly series, and have compiled the sweetest pet adoption photos we could find. Continue scrolling to check them out and in case you’ve missed our earlier publications, we kindly invite you to catch up: October, September, and August.

Missouri farmer traps ‘crazy-looking cat’ that turns out to be wild African serval

February 4, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Wild African cat rescued after found in live trap on Missouri farm

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, rescued an African serval that had been living in the wild in Ava, Missouri.

AVA, Mo. – A Missouri family has seen some strange things prowl on their farmland in the Ozark Mountains, but discovering a wild African cat was a first.

The Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, received an email on Jan. 17 from a farmer in Ava, Missouri, that he had caught an African serval in a live trap. He told the sanctuary that the cat had been meandering on his property for about 6 months.

“Whenever it was little, I came home late one night, and it runs across the road … I thought, ‘wow, that was a crazy-looking cat,'” the farmer’s son said in a video posted by the sanctuary on its Facebook page.

Refuge president Tanya Smith said the cat escaped somewhere or was let go near the farm.

“They had taken it to the vet and tried to find if it had a microchip in it, and it didn’t,” she said. “There was no identification for this little this African serval.”

The 30-pound cat is estimated to be about 6 years old. African servals are typically found south of the Sahara Desert.

‘Nobody knew where this cat had come from’

The captured African serval had been successful at hunting and was able to find birds to eat, which was evident from the feathers scattered in her lair between some hay bales.

“It’s probably what saved it through this last big storm we had,” Smith said.

After traveling about 2 hours north to Ava, Smith and her team were able to transfer the animal from the live trap into a pet carrier. They brought her back to the sanctuary and put her in their veterinary clinic quarantine area. She was full of parasites and worms.

“Nobody knew where this cat had come from,” Smith said. “She was full of fleas and had some other issues going on with some frostbite on her tail.”

On Friday, Smith said she took two calls from people who thought it was their cat.

“How many are out there? Crazy!,” she said.

Looking for a lifetime of love

It can be a rough life in the wild for African servals. Even though they’re not completely domesticated, they haven’t really been taught to hunt like they were raised by their mother.

“Who knows how long she was out there,” Smith said. “If we hadn’t rescued her, I’m afraid that she wouldn’t have lived more than a couple more weeks because of the infection in her paw was pretty significant.”

The African cat species is not used to Ozark winters. Even at the Arkansas sanctuary, caregivers provide heated buildings for these animals because they are indigenous to Africa.

Smith said there’s a problem with these types of animals being let loose. This was the third over the years that ended up at the sanctuary after it was released into the wild environment.

Today, the cat is doing well. As she recovers, the sanctuary is looking for somebody to sponsor her care. The non-profit is looking for anyone that wants to commit for the cat’s lifetime – which could be up to 20 years of age.

“This was an emergency rescue. We weren’t really prepared for bringing another African serval in,” Smith said. “We do have nine already at the refuge, but we have decided to keep her here, and we have made room for her.”

African servals make terrible pets

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge was founded by Smith’s family in 1992. The nearly 500-acre ranch was started after a black-market breeder showed up on a woman’s doorstep with 42 lions and tigers in three cattle trailers. The breeder was on the run from the law in Texas and desperately needed to find a home for the cats.

A friend of the woman’s family lived on a ranch in Eureka Springs and offered temporary refuge for the cats. The ranch, known today as Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, has rescued more than 400 big cats and 100 other animals over the last 31 years.

The sanctuary was also instrumental in getting the Big Cat Public Safety Act passed last year. Signed by President Joe Biden on Dec. 20, it officially ends the dangerous trade in pet big cats. It also helps ensure that no more cubs are ripped from their mothers at birth to be traumatized for profit, according to the Animal Welfare Institute.

While the law stops people from speed breeding big cats, the smaller cats, like African servals, caracals, and Savannah cats aren’t part of that same legislation. Smith said she continues to get calls on these smaller breed exotic animals from people thinking they are going to make a good pet. However, they soon discover that they can’t train it right and stop feeding on raw meat.

“It’s not going to be fine in your house,” Smith said. “It’s going to eat your other pets or attack your children or pee in your house, because they’re very territorial.”

They are predators, Smith warns, not pets.

Confident and a little ‘crazy,’ Alex Loutitt leaps into Canadian ski jumping lore | CBC Sports

February 4, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Before she turned 10, Alex Loutitt became “obsessed” with ski jumping after watching the sport at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Before she turned 20, the Calgary native was an Olympic medallist.

“I always grew up saying I want to win Canada’s first Olympic medal for ski jumping, and the kids on the playground would be like, ‘Yeah right, OK, you’re crazy,'” Loutitt said in a recent interview with CBC Sports.

“But I mean, I graduated high school an Olympic medallist, so I wasn’t that crazy.”

Loutitt, now 19, was part of the Canadian squad that won bronze at the 2022 Beijing Olympics in the mixed team event.

Days earlier, Loutitt was disqualified in her individual competition when she weighed in 30 grams too light for her skis – about the equivalent of a bag of chips.

  • Her Gwich’in roots gave her grit, says gold medal ski jumper Alexandria Loutitt

As it turns out, that is the exact kind of adversity in which Loutitt thrives.

“I say my brain is like a block of Swiss cheese. I’ve got a lot of holes in my head and there’s random thoughts in these holes, but with a little bit of pressure it’s just one thought,” she said.

In January, Loutitt became the first Canadian woman to ever win a World Cup event, taking top spot at a competition in Japan weeks after returning from a fractured foot. Her next competition begins Thursday with the world junior championships in Whistler, B.C.

WATCH | Loutitt soars to World Cup victory:

She initially suffered the injury in July, but it was misdiagnosed by doctors as an ankle sprain that merely required a week or two of rest. Loutitt fought through immense pain to continue training.

Finally, in the middle of a September training, she received the news of a fracture.

“I was on the hill and my coach was like, ‘You need to go in … I just got a call from the doctor, you shouldn’t even be walking on your foot right now,'” Loutitt said.

When Loutitt returned to World Cup action in December, Ski Jump Canada was hoping for a top-15 finish. Instead, she placed fourth, missing the podium by 0.4 points.

“The last session I had before I started competing again was awful, like so bad. But I’m the kind of person that jumps better in competition, so I was hungry and I wanted to do well and it was just such a tiny thing that needed to be changing that made a world of difference,” she said.

Hidden medal

It’s that confident mindset that’s vaulted Loutitt into Canadian ski jumping lore around the same time she might be picking a university major.

CBC Sports ski jumping analyst Rob Keith said confidence is key to Loutitt’s long-term success.

“It’s a mental game and you might find success early in your career and then struggle to keep it or to find it again later on. But I think that she has all the great building blocks of someone who can do that,” he said.

He added that her consistent takeoffs have propelled her into the upper echelon of the sport.

“That’s the key component to a good jump is that tenth of a second … and making sure that all of the angles of your body are all correct [while] going 90 kilometres an hour. It’s quite complex but her consistency with that right now is really where her talent lies,” he said.

  • Alexandria Loutitt wins Canada’s 1st-ever gold in women’s World Cup ski jumping

Loutitt was born into ski jumping with confidence. Normally, young skiers begin with lower start gates and gradually move up the hill. Instead, a coach sent Loutitt to the top gate right away.

Now, she’s walking around with a Superman sock equipped with a sewn-in tracking device in her purse.

Hidden within the sock? That Olympic bronze medal.

Loutitt said it was the heavily decorated moguls skier Mikaël Kingsbury, whom she met in Beijing, who gave her the idea about where to keep her medal.

“I was with [teammate] Abigail [Strate] and we were both just so star struck, jaw dropped, like oh my goodness,” Loutitt said. “And then after we won the medal, all the freestyle skiers were leaving and then he wrote a little message for us and it was one of those moments that like wow, he knows who I am. I’m mindblown.”

‘We love the sport’

Loutitt, Strate and the rest of the Canadian ski jumping team currently train out of Slovenia, in part because there is only one operational ski jumping hill in Canada, located in Whistler.

Loutitt credits the team’s passion in overcoming those unfavourable conditions.

“The only reason we still do it is because we love the sport and we love the community we’re still part of,” she said. “If you look at other Olympic nations, a lot of them don’t have the same passion that we do and they just have the funding and we’re still out here and we’re beating them.”

But Keith said the lack of facilities at home remains worrisome.

“It’s a bit of an interesting story that way where we are seeing a lot of success at a high level, but at the same time we need to really focus on having a place to be able to train in Canada that allows young ski jumpers to flourish here.”

Ideally, continued success would lead to more eyeballs and increased funding, a combination which could result in a perfect confluence of interest and resources.

All Loutitt needs, at least for now, is that confidence.

“I feel like there was never a point when I didn’t think [an Olympic medal] could happen. I’ve always been crazy, so I always believed it could happen.”

Eddie Murphy makes Oscar slap joke at Golden Globes: ‘Keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f***ing mouth!’ | The Independent

Eddie Murphy had some simple advice for young creatives making their way in the film industry.

The comedic actor accepted a lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes on Tuesday (10 January).

“I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity… Just do these three things,” Murphy told the audience.

“One, pay your taxes. Two, mind your business. Three, keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f***ing mouth!”

Murphy’s final piece of advice was a quip about the controversial 2022 Oscars moment that saw Smith slap presenter Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Since the incident, Smith, who was condemned for his actions, apologised and resigned as a member of the Academy.

He attributed his actions to “bottled rage”.

Elsewhere in the ceremony, host Jerrod Carmichael drew gasps from the crowd with a Scientology remark about Tom Cruise, while Colin Farrell and Michelle Yeoh both refused to be played off stage by the ceremony’s producers after winning awards.

Viewers were also left wondering whether Elvis star Austin Butler’s voice was his own, or whether he was performing his acceptance speech in character as Elvis Presley.

Crazy 92nd-minute fight breaks as Ferran Torres and Stefan Savic are both sent off for WRESTLING | Daily Mail Online

February 3, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

There was a bizzare moment at the end of Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday night as Ferran Torres and Stefan Savic were both sent off for wrestling on the pitch in the closing moments.

The incident started as they vied for the ball in the 92nd minute, but the pair continued to scrap after the ball had been cleared by Torres, as the Barca forward pulled his opponent to the ground and grappled with him for around five seconds.

There appeared to be hair-pulls, shoves and headlocks between Torres and the Atletico defender, with neither player interesting in the ball as it travelled up the pitch.

Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 in their LaLiga clash on Sunday night

There were ugly scenes in extra-time as wrestling broke out between opponents on the pitch

Both Ferran Torres and Stefan Savic were sent off for a bizarre scrap in the 92nd minute

They eventually both stood up and shoved each other away, but the incident still saw both players shown straight red cards.

It came at the end of an ill-tempered game that saw Atleti players swarm the ref after Ousmane Dembele scored the only goal of the game due to complaints of a foul by Gavi in the build up.

Despite its somewhat ugly nature, the win sends Barca three points clear of rivals Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, and continues an excellent run of form that has seen them win four of their last five games.

Manager Xavi was in a jubilant mood after the game, as he said: ‘It’s not just three points. this is a huge morale boost. Without playing brilliantly we were able to suffer and come away with all three points.’

Despite the late drama, Barca held on well to go three points clear at the top of LaLiga

Barca boss Xavi called the victory a ‘massive morale boost’ for his players

For Atletico, the loss continues a somewhat gloomy season. They are now 14 points behind Barca and out of the European places.

‘The first 20 minutes we couldn’t got into our stride,’ Diego Simeone said after his side’s loss. ‘It wasn’t until they scored that we started to play as we wanted.’

Barcelona will next be in action when they face Real Betis in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final on Thursday, while Simeone’s men will face Almeria in the league on Sunday.
