White House criticizes Pence for ‘homophobic’ joke about Buttigieg’s parental leave
Former Vice President Mike Pence is facing criticism from the White House after he joked about Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s parental leave and about postpartum depression.
Pence delivered remarks at the annual Gridiron Club dinner Saturday night. The former vice president joked that Buttigieg’s two months of “maternity leave” to adopt newborn twins in 2021 with his husband led to transportation woes nationwide last year, The Washington Post reported.
“When Pete’s two children were born, he took two months’ maternity leave whereupon thousands of travelers were stranded in airports, the air traffic system shut down, and airplanes nearly collided on our runways,” Pence said, according to the Post.
“Pete is the only person in human history to have a child and everyone else gets postpartum depression,” Pence added, the Post reported.
The White House issued a stern condemnation of Pence’s remarks in a statement Monday.
“The former vice president’s homophobic joke about Secretary Buttigieg was offensive and inappropriate, all the more so because he treated women suffering from postpartum depression as a punchline,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.
“He should apologize to women and LGBTQ people, who are entitled to be treated with dignity and respect,” she added.
Buttigieg’s husband, Chasten, rebuked Pence as well in a tweet Monday, with a photo of the transportation secretary holding one of their newborns in the hospital.
Pence has not publicly responded to criticism of his remarks at the dinner. His former chief of staff, Marc Short, dismissed the White House’s demand for an apology from the former vice president.
“The Biden administration should spare America the faux outrage,” Short tweeted Monday afternoon.
Short pointed to remarks Secretary of State Antony Blinken reportedly made at the dinner, saying Blinken, who is Jewish and the stepson of a Holocaust survivor, “joked that he yearned for ‘the old days’ when ‘Jews did all the work.’”
“The White House would be wise to focus less on placating the woke police and focus more on bank failures, planes nearly colliding in mid-air, train derailments, and the continued supply chain crisis,” Short said.
Buttigieg has been a vocal critic of Pence’s cultural and religious conservatism since his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.
Buttigieg, former mayor of South Bend, Ind., and Pence, former Indiana governor, overlapped in the state’s politics for four years. They had a cordial relationship at the time, having collaborated on economic development issues in the state.
But in his campaign memoir, Buttigieg described his relationship with Pence as “complicated” as the gay mayor began emerging as a celebrated voice for LGBTQ equality and religious tolerance on the campaign trail.
In an interview with CNBC in 2019, Pence said they had a “great working relationship” and criticized the mayor’s characterization of his religious beliefs.
“He knows better,” Pence said in 2019. “He knows me.”

YouTube prankster shot while filming video at mall

A young prankster was shot and critically injured over the weekend while filming yet another prank video for his YouTube channel.
Just before noon on Sunday, 21-year-old Tanner Cook went to the Dulles Town Center mall in Dulles, Virginia, near Washington, D.C., to shoot a video for his YouTube channel, Classified Goons. Cook and the rest of the Classified Goons are known for venturing into public places and pranking unsuspecting people going about their days. Among his many pranks, Cook has posed as a Target employee, stolen people’s shopping carts at Walmart, and pretended to urinate on the floor of a store. The channel has nearly 40,000 subscribers.
What Cook and his crew intended to do at the Dulles mall on Sunday is unclear, but what is clear is that Cook encountered a particularly uncooperative participant near the mall’s food court. According to reports, a fight broke out, and a suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Alan Colie of Leesburg, allegedly pulled out a semi-automatic pistol and shot Cook in the abdomen.
Cook was raced to the hospital, where medical teams discovered that the bullet had punctured his stomach and liver. Luckily, doctors believe that Cook will make a full recovery.
“I was playing a prank and a simple practical joke, and this guy didn’t take it very well,” Cook explained from his hospital bed in the ICU. “He didn’t say anything to me.”
Colie was arrested within minutes of the shooting, booked into the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, and held without bond. He has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding, shooting in the commission of a felony, and discharging firearms within an occupied building. He is scheduled to appear in court again on May 3.
Despite the frightening experience, Cook insists that he will continue to make prank videos as soon as he recovers. His father, Jeramy Cook, told reporters that God has helped his family to remain calm and forgive the shooter.
“We need restoration, we need healing, and we need to come together,” Jeramy Cook said. “I pray for this young man and pray that he finds God in this. I believe that God saved our son’s life, and he could have easily died, but that’s not the outcome. God has plans for my son.”
Though the Cooks appear to be in hopeful spirits, Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis Randall is concerned about the impact the shooting will have on the community. “I’ve heard from so many of my constituents, and they’re traumatized,” Randall said. “The victims are more than just people directly involved. People have secondary trauma from this and may never walk back into this mall again.”
The incident remains under investigation. Reports indicate that police have used the camera footage from the thwarted prank video as evidence.

Mom Shopping At Target Hospitalized After Group Of Teens Put Bucket On Her Head For Prank

Sometimes pranks are harmless.
And often trends on TikTok are innocuous or at least stay with users on that platform.
This was not the case with the most recent TikTok Challenge, charmingly called The Bucket Challenge, which sent a mom to the hospital over the weekend. In what authorities believe to be a TikTok prank, a group of teenage boys placed a bucket on the head of a California mom as she was shopping at a nearby Target.
According to The Los Angeles Times and FOX station KTTV, Lana Clay-Monaghan was shopping in the baby section of the Target in Tustin, California on Sunday when the bucket was suddenly placed over her head.
Clay-Monaghan, in an interview with KTTV, said the last thing she remembers before passing out is asking the boys for help while they laughed.
According to the Tustin Police Department (TPD), four teenage boys are thought to be responsible for their attempt to gain social media clout. The boys appeared too young to have driven, so they are believed to be local and would have “walked or used public transportation.”
They are working with local schools to identify the perpetrators.
Comments on the Tustin Police Department’s Facebook post about the incident were highly critical of the teens behavior and lack of empathy and common sense.
Several people said someone is really going to get hurt.
@swaggyp/Facebook
You can never know someone’s medical condition from just watching them.
@jenifer.reinhardt.9/Facebook
Many people called for the boys’ punishment to set an example for others.
@ollada/Facebook
These aren’t exactly genius criminal masterminds, though.
@dtwithers/Facebook
People were speculating about the woman’s health, but others replied it doesn’t matter if a person has an underlying condition.
Putting a bucket on someone’s head unexpectedly is not okay.
@qpe4ha/Facebook
Others added recommendations for being vigilant.
@alexispaige/Facebook
But who thinks this is okay to do?
@teri.babb.3/Facebook
A lot of people agreed the teens should face consequences once they are caught.
@100047293140096/Facebook
Someone argued they belong in juvenile detention.
@lynda.cain.1/TikTok
This should count as assault and battery, many suggested.
@karen.palma.9461/Facebook
The case is unfolding, but hopefully with this incident the bucket challenge wwillquickly become a fad of the past.
