Pat Cummins whacks Piers Morgan, MCC members in hilarious Fletch and Hindy interview

Australian cricketers Pat Cummins and Usman Khawaja have been grilled over the recent Ashes campaign in England on this week’s episode of The Late Show with Matty Johns.

Australia retained the coveted Ashes urn after the five-Test series, which was headlined by multiple controversial moments, ended as a 2-2 draw.

Cummins and Khawaja, during a sit-down interview with rugby league greats Bryan Fletcher and Nathan Hindmarsh, unpacked the Ashes campaign on Thursday evening, including the infamous Long Room ordeal.

After wicketkeeper Alex Carey stumped England’s Jonny Bairstow on day five of the Lord’s Test, the MCC members hurdled abuse at Australia’s cricketers as they returned to the sheds for lunch.

“It took us off guard,” Khawaja said.

“They were coming at you like a pack of dogs. One guy was literally frothing at his mouth.”

Cummins continued: “I must say it would probably the least scary mob I’ve ever seen.”

The Australian captain also revealed he had spotted Bairstow wandering out of his crease the previous delivery, signalling for Carey to attempt the stumping.

“That’s my fault,” Cummins confessed.

England bowler Stuart Broad, the pantomime Ashes villain, announced his retirement after the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval, taking the final two wickets of the series final in dramatic scenes.

Fletcher asked: Is Stuart Broad the biggest knob-jockey in world cricket? Would he be top three?

Cummins responded with tongue firmly in cheek: “I can’t think of the other two.”

Khawaja and Cummins were also quizzed about British television broadcaster Piers Morgan, who fired off several bizarre tweets throughout the Ashes campaign. The 58-year-old became England’s unofficial cheer squad captain during the series, repeatedly criticising the Australians and praising Ben Stokes’ men.

“When it comes to cricket, you probably couldn’t mention a more irrelevant person,” Cummins quipped.

Australia’s attention turns to the Cricket World Cup, which gets underway in India next month.
