The 52-year-old took over the role after Ryan Tubridy decided to step down from the helm after 14 years earlier this year.

The presenter rocked out onto the new Late Late Show set tonight wearing a navy suit with a matching t-shirt.

He was joined tonight by The 2 Johnnies, Mary McAleese, James McClean, Tommy Tiernan, Hector Ó hEochagáin and Laurita Blewitt.

The reaction for Patrick from RTE viewers has been nothing but incredible.

Annette said: “I’m so relieved that’s it’s as good as I hoped! Well done.”

Theresa wrote: “Patrick Kielty is smashing it. We have a winner! Got to say his sense of humour. Reminds me of (a dilute version) of Ricky Gervais at the Oscars.”

Aoife tweeted: “OMG this is gas – just fully embracing the Irishness! Now I know why he wanted this gig.”

Paul added: “Doing a great job – well done Patrick Kielty.”

Speaking at the beginning of the show Patrick said: “Thank you so, so much folks for the lovely welcome.

“I was standing out the back there like Joe Duffy about to be introduced to the Wolfe Tone gig.

“Good evening and welcome to a brand new season of the Late Late Show.

“Great to be here. So nice to finally get started because as you all know folks The Late Late Show has been off air now for four months.

“I say off air it’s been on Morning Ireland, Prime Time, Liveline – what a treat it is to have The Late Late on after the News.”

He then went on to speak about the set changes as he further joked about the backlash the station has faced over the past few months.

Patrick addressed the RTE Oireachtas Committee meetings and the failure of the Toy Show Musical.

The Down star continued: “By the way, if you haven’t noticed folks everything in here is new.

“We have got a new opening, we have got a new logo and we’ve got a brand new house band folks, give it up for Grant Thornton and the Flip Flops.

“And we’re trying out a brand new format tonight on the show where the host gets to ask the questions instead of having to answer them at the Oireachtas.

“I give that one two weeks as well.

“We also have our shiny new set what do we think of this? No expense spared or if you’re the host no expense spared.

“But we wanted to make a special effort for you tonight folks because apparently lots of folks are tuning in this evening which is very exciting.

“Based on the latest figures for TV licence payments we’re expecting an audience of 27 people tuning in tonight.

“And just to put that into perspective that’s almost double the amount of people who saw Toy Show The Musical.”
