South Park makes Baldur’s Gate 3 joke, Larian quickly corrects it

April 4, 2024 by humorouz Leave a Comment

It’s not quite the leviathan of TV satire it once was, but there must still be some thrill in seeing South Park reference something you’ve made. No one needed the rude cartoon boys to confirm that Baldur’s Gate 3 has been a huge success, but a joke about cross-dimensional BG3 save files in the latest South Park special does underscore how wildly mainstream the D&D RPG has gone.

But like a good, stern DM who doesn’t let the rules go out the window just because the players are joking around, Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios was quick to log an objection to the gag. Greeting the show with a wonderfully dry “Hello @SouthPark,” the studio pointed out that the joke misrepresents BG3’s cross-save capabilities.

The special, called South Park: Joining the Panderverse, premiered on Paramount+ today, and based mostly on the trailer, has to do with an alternate South Park universe influenced by the show’s take on ‘diverse casting.’ All you need to know in this context is that it involves a multiverse, which is where Baldur’s Gate 3 comes in.

In a scene posted on X, alternate reality Cartman (played by Janeshia Adams-Ginyard) complains that she’s “already like 50 hours into Baldur’s Gate 3” but has to start a new game. “Do save games not cross between multiple universes?” she asks.

Stan responds: “Save games don’t even cross between PCs and PS5s, why would they cross between multiple universes?”

As Larian pointed out in its response, however, Baldur’s Gate 3 save games can be shared between PCs and PS5s.

“While Baldur’s Gate 3 saves can’t cross multiversal barriers, we can confirm they do actually transfer between PC and PS5,” the studio wrote.

Hello @SouthParkWhile Baldur’s Gate 3 saves can’t cross multiversal barriers, we can confirm they do actually transfer between PC and PS5! https://t.co/yR5YQrLwcfOctober 27, 2023

It would’ve been a decent gag otherwise, but so it goes. The larger joke driving the scene (the clip above isn’t the entirely of BG3’s cameo) is better, but I’ll leave it unspoiled.

There’s no word on whether Larian plans to support cross-universe saves in the future, but we’ll ask the next time we’re in touch with their director of multiversal communications. If you want to use Baldur’s Gate 3’s cross-platform saving feature in this universe, you can do so with a Larian account.

‘Modern Warfare 3’ Isn’t the Only Game to Brutalize Cheaters in Hilarious Ways

April 3, 2024 by humorouz Leave a Comment

— Activision

Cheaters have something new to fear in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and it’s not just the dull pang of guilt at their misbegotten wins. As Activision announced in a pre-launch blog post, Modern Warfare 3 will have a rather direct method of keeping cheaters from ruining other players’ games — a system evocatively named Splat!

As Activision details in its announcement, Splat — well, it makes cheaters go splat!

“With Splat, if a cheater is discovered, we may randomly, and for fun, disable their parachute sending them careening into the ground after they deploy,” Activision says.

The resulting splat cuts cheaters’ games short to keep them from impacting the results, while making it extremely obvious that they’ve been caught. Activision says it will only be used in provable cases of cheating, and can’t be automatically triggered by player reports.

And if a cheater is discovered mid-match rather than joining a new game after they’ve already been identified, “Splat can also adjust player velocity, which transforms a bunny hop into a 10,000-foot drop, taking them out instantly,” Activision says.

Splat is just one of several anti-cheat tools in Modern Warfare 3, and it’s by far the most visible. Other mitigations are more subtle; hampering players’ performance in ways that don’t involve being smooshed like a bug on a windshield, so that developers can learn more about the cheats being used.

But they’re also not as fun.

While Splat may be one of the most entertaining anti-cheat systems out there, it’s not the first time developers have used a potentially game-ruining situation to put cheaters on blast. Ricochet, Activision’s overall anti-cheat program for Call of Duty, also had fun with cheaters with Modern Warfare 2’s Hallucinations system. With Hallucinations activated, cheaters would see fake players in their games, tricking them into shooting as ghosts, while the rest of the game goes on uninterrupted.

When Rockstar found that GTA Online players were using an exploit to bring an overpowered car from single-player into multiplayer lobbies, the developer didn’t just patch the exploit out. Instead, Rockstar made the car immediately explode when players entered, as would-be cheaters shared on Reddit. A legitimate version of the car has since been added to the online mode.

One common but always funny way developers troll cheaters is to simply let them keep playing the game — but only in specialized lobbies that they stuff exclusively with other cheaters. Titanfall 2, Max Payne 3, Call of Duty: Warzone, and others have all pulled that particular trick to let cheaters aimbot at each other to their heart’s content without ruining legitimate players’ good time.

Guild Wars 2 took a particularly brutal approach to curb one particularly egregious cheater. In 2015, the player of a character called DarkSide was caught using a bunch of exploits in PvP battles. So many players reported DarkSide to ArenaNet mods that the developer took over manual control of the character, had him hurl himself off of a cliff, then deleted him before banning the account.

Maybe the most famous example of creative punishment doesn’t come from a competitive game and isn’t strictly about cheating, but look, it would just feel wrong not to mention it. In Second Life, players who were caught griefing (that is, ruining things for other players either through hacks or just being a jerk) were sent to the cornfield, which is exactly what it sounds like. An area totally cut off from the rest of the game, the cornfield contained a TV playing the 1940 film Boy in Court, an incredibly slow-moving tractor, and of course, rows upon rows of corn.

The thing is, cheating is going to exist in any multiplayer game, especially ones as fiercely competitive as Modern Warfare 3. In a game explicitly about combat, players are naturally going to get agressive, internalizing the warlike mindset espoused by the game to win at any costs. Add streaming and social media to the mix, where one of the best ways to chase clout is sharing clips of yourself dominating other players, and it’s kind of a wonder that cheating isn’t even more rampant.

There are absolutely times when anti-cheat software goes too far, falsely flagging benign mods as cheats, but when cheaters are identified, at least systems like Splat can turn them into a rousing spectacle for everyone else.

Guardiola responds with it’s ‘not fair’ to Klopp’s ‘biggest joke’ title remark

April 3, 2024 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Pep Guardiola is not particularly fond of his Man City side being deemed ‘failures’ if they don’t win the league again, while others find themselves celebrated for ‘one’ success. It has been an unprecedented period for City, dropping points for four successive games to sit behind both Liverpool and Arsenal in the table. Jurgen Klopp knows writing Guardiola’s side out of the title race would “be the biggest joke in the history of football,” and that was put to Pep before his side’s trip to Luton. The City manager responded to Klopp’s comments, said after the win at Sheffield United, by saying it is “not fair” that his team are held to consistently high standards while one title win for others is deemed “a big success” – we know a dig when we hear it. “Jurgen knows what happened to us in this short period can happen, he knows that. Man City can have a bad period,” Guardiola said. “I never believed in the big compliments or the bad, bad situations. The most difficult thing to do is win, win, win. “We’ve done it. For many years, we’re the main candidates to win everything. “The only team who is going to fail by not winning the Premier League is us. “For the rest it’s a big success – any team. A big success. Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea don’t win everything – but that’s normal. “City should win. That isn’t fair. It’s difficult to handle that in every week, every three days, during years and years. “[What we have done] is exceptional, but their positions is normal. In sport, you can have seasons. Just take a look at our rivals, just win once, we are always there – and we have to continue that.” It is what comes with the territory, especially when a club has been charged with more than 100 financial breaches to ensure they win everything in sight. The Premier League title race is shaping up to be an intriguing battle. The Reds currently sit at the top of the table but Arsenal and Aston Villa are not far behind. But Liverpool were always going to be “back” this season, says Guardiola, due to the character ingrained into the team – demonstrated by one comeback win after another. Guardiola continued: “I’ve got a lot of trust in myself. I will help the team – I don’t know how but I’ll help the team to come back. Will it be enough? I don’t know, the contenders are so strong. “The consistency of Arsenal over the past two years has been amazing and Liverpool are back – I knew it from day one for many reasons, the character is still there.”
