‘Absolute joke!’ – Man United fans make same Man City point after VAR disallows goal vs Burnley – Manchester Evening News

January 11, 2024 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Manchester United supporters have highlighted the inconsistency of VAR after Jonny Evans was denied a fairytale return goal against Burnley.

The defender – starting his first United game since 2015 – headed the ball home on 25 minutes but video replays showed Rasmus Hojlund was in the way of Clarets goalkeeper James Trafford.

Reds fans have compared the incident to the controversial goal allowed by VAR when Nathan Ake headed home for Manchester City against Fulham earlier this month. Manuel Akanji was deemed not to be in the eye-line of Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno despite standing in line with the ball.

Fulham players were furious about the decision to allow the goal, with even Erling Haaland admitting post-match that he thought the decision was wrong and that he would have been ‘fuming’.

PGMOL head Howard Webb later admitted that the officials got the decision wrong on the day. United fans are aggrieved that VAR is lacking consistency amid Evans’ ruled-out header. Many on social media aired their views and compared the incident to that of Ake’s goal against Fulham.

@TrevorEvans77: Such inconsistency in regards to VAR. I guess if you wear light blue it’s ok but everyone else a big no.

@thestretford3nd: How can that be offside when Hojlund literally doesn’t make any action towards the ball after Evans heads it and the keeper pushed Hojlund out of the way with no regard for saving the ball. No Burnley player called for offside. VAR IS A DISGRACE!

@Alisdair_0204: That’s an absolute joke. Evans was so close to the goal and the gk could see everything.

@DeepRedDevil2: Jonny Evans goal disallowed by the VAR, United’s joy short-lived. Nothing’s going in our favour, tough times.

Education secretary butchers famous Ronald Reagan quote, but the joke is on him | Blaze Media

Colin Myers/Claflin University/HBCU via Getty Images © 2023 Blaze Media LLC. All rights reserved. Education secretary butchers famous Ronald Reagan quote, but the joke is on him November 28, 2023 Education Secretary Miguel Cardona is going viral for badly misrepresenting a famous Ronald Reagan quote. Several weeks ago, Cardona spoke at the 2023 Winter Meeting of the Western Governors Association in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. During his speech, Cardona laid out the ways in which the Education Department wants to partner with governors to help states achieve their education goals. At the end of his speech, Cardona channeled his inner Ronald Reagan to summarize his motivations. “I think it was President Reagan who said, ‘We’re from the government. We’re here to help!'” the secretary recounted. It’s true that Reagan said those words in that order. But what Cardona conveniently omitted from the quotation — either accidentally or purposefully, both possibilities giving insight into Cardona’s perspective on government intervention — is that Reagan observed that those words are the “most terrifying” words that an American can hear. This is the full quote: The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government, and I’m here to help. Reagan uttered those words at a press conference in August 1986 to emphasize, according to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, that “government tends to be inefficient, to such a degree that instead of helping, it often causes harm instead.” This, of course, is the irony of Cardona’s blunder. In an America where the centralized government is bigger and more powerful than ever, Cardona used Reagan’s words to advocate for the exact opposite vision of America from the one that Reagan dreamed of: Cardona is promising more government intervention, whereas Reagan envisioned an America with less. What is even more ironic is that it was the education secretary, of all government officials, who butchered this famous American quote. Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that Reagan wanted to abolish the Education Department, a proposal that he eventually dropped because Congress did not support it. Like Blaze News? Ask Elaine: Am I ‘crazy’ for supporting my partner through law school? – The Washington Post

January 11, 2024 by humorouz Leave a Comment

I’m fine with his decision to change career paths and do something he believes will be more fulfilling. There are just a few issues on my end. He hasn’t told anyone in our families yet and doesn’t want me to say anything to them until he’s accepted into law school. I don’t have any real close friends (that’s a problem for another time since making friends is hard), and I feel like I have no one to talk to about these changes and the potential stress we’re about to face.

Aside from the assumed debt of law school, there’s also the additional burden of our lease ending before him knowing where he wants to go to school. Then there’s the reality that he most likely will not work or will work part-time during his first few semesters (and we live in a relatively expensive city, which means I would most likely foot the bill of many expenses). I’m also anxious about the added stress that law school could put on both of us and our relationship.

Am I absolutely crazy for sticking around for this, especially when we’re not married? He’s my best friend, and I know he’s more than capable of achieving his goals, but I worry I’ll go through these life changes based on his motives without thinking about myself first. Not to mention how much stress it feels could be compounded on my shoulders for the next few years. Keeping my mouth shut has been eating me up inside and I want to feel confident going forward, not just like I’m along for the ride.

Silent & Stressed: I’m sorry you don’t have friends to process all of this with but if I were your friend, I’d ask why you are staying silent and letting it eat you up inside instead of talking to your partner. Especially if he is, as you say, your best friend? Are you afraid of discouraging him or putting a damper on his dreams? Has he asked you how you feel about all of this? If not, this feels like a red flag.

When you are in a committed partnership and you are the one initiating life decisions that affect both people, you have a responsibility to your partner to create an open dialogue to work through the possibilities together. If he wants you to go along for this ride — especially if there’s any expectation of you financially supporting him along the way — he owes you an upfront conversation. Whether his desire is for you to consider relocating with him or to go long-distance, he can’t expect you to agree to a half-baked, under-communicated plan. This lack of communication could be a sign of larger issues, because open communication is vital to any relationship.

However, I imagine that he, too, is experiencing bouts of anxiety about this major life transition. Have you asked him why he isn’t ready to let anyone else in on his law school goals yet? No matter his reasoning, it doesn’t negate your need for more of a support system to help think through all the potential changes ahead.

I know you say the friendship void you’re feeling is a problem for another day but it may be more of a factor here than you think. When your social life outside of your relationship is lacking, the problems within your relationship can seem bigger. In lieu of built-in community, seek out a therapist to work through this with, because if you don’t get it all out, it will continue eating you up inside.

While he should have initiated these important discussions with you, we can’t deal in “shoulds.” At this point, the ball is in your court. Before approaching him about any of this, it is really important that you get clear on your own goals and desires for the next few years of your life. You won’t get these years back and the reality is you’re not married, so you shouldn’t make moves like someone who is. Take a beat to journal and discuss with your therapist how your partner can support your goals and what you are willing to sacrifice in helping him reach his. Then determine what your non-negotiables are and how to communicate them.

You asked if it’s “crazy” to go along with all of this, and, frankly, it is if you don’t confront all aspects of what this means for you head on. Relationships are about compromise. But it isn’t selfish to think about and prioritize your own desires when negotiating what that compromise looks like — especially before you merge your plans with someone else’s. I hope you two talk it all out and get on the same page ASAP. This constant state of silence and stress is no way to live.

The Song Willie Nelson Wrote the Same Week as “Crazy,” Eventually Recorded by Elvis Presley: “Funny How Time Slips Away”

January 10, 2024 by humorouz Leave a Comment

By the late 1950s, Willie Nelson was traveling from his home in Pasadena, Texas to perform at the Esquire Ballroom in Houston and used his commute time to write songs for his label D Records. During one of his weeks of commuting, Nelson penned three hit songs, including “Crazy,” which became a hit for Patsy Cline in 1961, and “Night Life.” At first, “Night Life” was rejected by D Records’ owner Pappy Daily for not being country enough, so Nelson recorded it as “Nite Life” and under another name. “They wouldn’t record it because they said it was too bluesy,” said Nelson in 2019. “It wasn’t country. So I recorded ‘Night Life’ under the name of Hugh Nelson on another label across town just to prove a point. … I think it’s still the best record of it. I did it with Paul Buskirk, Herb Remington, Dean Reynolds—some of the greatest jazz musicians around Houston.” The third song Nelson wrote during this week would eventually recorded by Elvis Presley a decade later. Videos by American Songwriter “In one week I wrote ‘Crazy,’ ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’ and ‘Night Life,’” said Nelson. “That’s when I decided maybe to go to Nashville,” Nelson said. “So I took off to Nashville in my ’46 Buick and went immediately to a place called Tutu’s Orchid Lounge, where I had heard was the spot to be if you want to find some songwriters. And, sure enough, it was the great spot to be.” Nelson added “I wish I had known then what [the songs] were going to do. Maybe it’s better that I didn’t—made enough mistakes as it was. I had no idea that these songs would be as successful as they have been.” [RELATED: 6 Songs Willie Nelson Wrote That Were Made Famous by Other Artists] Billy Walker Country singer Billy Walker, later known for his hit “Charlie’s Shoes,” was the first to record “Funny How Time Slips Away.” Walker took the song to No. 23 on the Hot Country & Western (Hot Country Songs) chart. Nelson also recorded his version of the song for his 1962 debut …And Then I Wrote , which also featured his version of “Crazy.” The Meaning Nelson’s lyrics run through the sadness of the passing of time—of people, places, things, and memories. Well, hello thereWhy, it’s been a long long time, thank you very muchAnd how am i doing?Oh, i guess that I’m doing fineIt’s been so long nowBut it seems nowThat it was only yesterdayGee, ain’t it funny? How time just slips awayAnd how’s your new love?Well, I hope that he’s doing fineAnd i heard you told himThat you’d love him ’til the end of timeAnd that’s the same thingThat you told me ‘Elvis Country’ Presley later recorded “Funny How Time Slips Away” for his 13th album  Elvis Country (I’m 10,000 Years Old) . Elvis Country , which featured the lead single “I Really Don’t Want to Know” and “There Goes My Everything,” peaked at No. 12 on the  Billboard  200. Al Green Though “Funny How Time Slips Away” was covered by Presley, along with dozens of artists, including B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Wanda Jackson, Bryan Ferry, and Reba McEntire, it was Al Green’s 1973 version from his Call Me , that turned Nelson’s lovelorn lyrics into a smoldering ballad: I gotta go now / Guess I’ll see you hanging round / Don’t know when though, oh, no / Never know when I’ll be back in town / But I remember what I told you / That in time you’re gonna pay.   In 1994, Green later released another version of the song with Lyle Lovett on the 1994 compilation album Rhythm, Country and Blues , which earned him a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
