Here, there and everywhere: why the world is still crazy about the Beatles | Neil Spencer | The Guardian

November 18, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Perhaps the real surprise behind this week’s release of the “final” Beatles song, Now and Then, is not that Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr wanted to resurrect the band one last time – uniting them with the “crystal clear” voice of John Lennon from a 1970s home tape, a feat enabled by technology Peter Jackson developed for his 2021 Get Back documentary – but that there remains a seemingly insatiable thirst for all things Fab Four.

It is now 60 years since Beatlemania engulfed first Britain and then, via America, the world. No one then imagined that in 2023 we would still be entranced by the group. The shelf life of pop acts was measured in months, or at best years – the Beatles themselves didn’t make it past their 1970 break-up. Yet this month sees a fresh surge of interest. Accompanying Now and Then are expanded versions of the Red and Blue compilations first issued in 1973, Philip Norman’s biography of George Harrison (to go alongside his tomes on Lennon and McCartney), and an Apple TV series, Murder Without A Trial, examining the 1980 killing of Lennon outside his New York home.

Until the end of last month, the National Portrait Gallery was running Eyes of The Storm, McCartney’s evocative exhibition after his “discovery” of a cache of photos from 1963-64. And you can still enjoy National Trust tours of John and Paul’s Liverpool homes, and hear Hey Jude ringing from English football terraces.

Some reasons for the ongoing obsession are straightforward. Since even the humblest contribution to Beatledom is guaranteed global attention, more products keep arriving. Then there is the nostalgia of baby boomers for their youth – not least in the US, where the likes of Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen were inspired to pick up guitars by the Beatles’ celebrated appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.

Behind it all lies the enduring quality of the music – the exuberance of the early hits, the inventive plunge into psychedelia, the gentle beauty of the love songs – and where the Fabs pioneered, the rest followed. Their career still describes the perfect arc of pop success, from early gigs in Merseyside and immersion in the crucible of Hamburg lowlife to becoming local heroes, national sensations and international icons. Unlike their peers the Rolling Stones, they didn’t stick around to become a vainglorious tribute band to themselves.

The foursome’s panache – the “Beatle cuts”, the casual ostentation of their clothes, their gritty ambition – helped make them the personification of an era in which optimism, hope and social mobility were possible. They radiated an infectious joyousness which now seems remote and beyond reach, and even when they were naive – Maharishi, Apple – they were brave. As Harrison put it: “They [the public] gave their money, and gave their screams, but the Beatles gave their nervous systems. They used us as an excuse to go mad, the world did, and then blamed it on us.”

Now and Then may be the Beatles’ “final song”, but it won’t be the final word in their story. McCartney, who has cannily curated the group’s legacy, may yet find another cache of photos, while one day, perhaps, we may get to read Lennon’s Dakota diaries, briefly glimpsed after his murder but swiftly recovered by Yoko Ono and kept secret ever since.

Loftus-Cheek and Tomori recall journey from Chelsea bus to Milan: “It’s crazy”

November 17, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

By: Oliver Fisher

AC Milan have uploaded a video starring Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fikayo Tomori driving around the city of Los Angeles, and some funny background was revealed about their discussions over the summer.

Loftus-Cheek and Tomori have been friends for many years given they both came through the academy at Chelsea and graduated to the first team ranks, and they were reunited this summer after a couple of years apart.

The centre-back was the first to make the move during the 2020-21 season, joining on an initial loan deal from Chelsea that became permanent six months later. Then it was the midfielder’s turn, as he signed a four-year contract in the summer window that has just closed.

Milan uploaded a video on their Dailymotion channel which dates back to the summer tour of the USA, and it features the two Cobham graduates speaking about several topics including their chats before Loftus-Cheek’s move took place.

Loftus-Cheek: “Now the climate here in LA is similar to what it was in Milan, it was very hot there too.”

Tomori: “It’s hot here but in Milan it feels like hell, the air is hot.”

Loftus-Cheek: “Training in Milan in the heat was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It’s hard to breathe. There is no respite from the heat, not even in the shade.”

Tomori: “The way we met was special, because we all had different eras. You would get on the bus until someone picked us up. You got on at the stop after me, you were always the last to get on.

“You went straight to train at the gym. And at the time you only arrived by bus. In your group there were people your age and people who weren’t. Everyone trained in different groups.

“And when you got back on the bus because you were a kid you asked: and how old are you? 9, 10? And you just made friends like that. Just starting to talk rubbish, we were being silly on the bus, talking about the game, school, training.

“So the journey went by quickly. How long did it actually last? 45 minutes? Yeah, 45 minutes to get to know each other. But you were just being stupid on the bus, just talking nonsense.

“And now we are at Milan. Do you remember the first time you wrote to me about Milan? And I thought: Why are you asking me about Milan?

“We talked about it at the beginning of the season, more or less about the international break. I thought you wanted to come to Milan just for a break, a city break.

“I said: ‘It’s a nice city, the weather is better…’ Then I didn’t hear from you again. And then you messaged me again later like ‘What’s the league like?’ How is Serie A? And I thought… Ruben, why are you asking me about the league?!”

Loftus-Cheek: “I remember, because I couldn’t tell you we were speaking. And then I just left it.”

Tomori: “And the worst thing is that you said something, I replied and then you just didn’t reply.”

Loftus-Cheek: “And then I told you I was coming and you thought I was joking.”

Tomori: “Oh yes. But it was the way you said it, so up front. ‘I’m coming’, and I was like shut up. And you reiterated: ‘I’m coming.’ And I’m like, ‘Really?’ I’m gonna wait, I’m gonna wait.”

Loftus-Cheek: “Yes, but you still didn’t believe me though.”

Tomori: “Yes, I didn’t believe you. Then I remember, when it started coming out on the internet. People were asking me, and I was like: ‘You lot, I’m not even gonna lie. Yeah Ruben is English and that, and he asked me a bit, and he said to me he’s probably gonna come, but I don’t believe him. I just wanna to be honest, I don’t believe it’.

“I just didn’t believe it yet. Then all my friends are asking me: ‘Is Ruben coming?’ Even Tammy [Abraham] is like: ‘Yo, is Ruben coming?’. Bro, I don’t know, I don’t know if I can take it seriously or not.

“I remember! I said: ‘We start preseason training 10th of July, am I gonna see you?”

Loftus-Cheek: “I remember, you said: ‘So I’m gonna see you on the 10th?’ And I said yes.”

Tomori: “And I thought, how long will this guy keep this up for? How long can he really keep this up for?”

Loftus-Cheek: “You know, my Italian is getting better. I’ve done no lessons since we got to LA.”

Tomori: “I’ll give you until Christmas, I don’t want to translate for you anymore ”

Tomori: “We went from the bus that took us to train in the youth team to the Chelsea first team. And now… Milan. That’s crazy right?”

Loftus-Cheek: “You know something else? I’m learning a different language, it’s crazy.”

Anton Du Beke ‘issued warning by Strictly bosses’ after making a naughty joke about fellow judge Craig Revel-Horwood during show | Daily Mail Online

November 17, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Anton Du Beke has reportedly received a telling off by Strictly Come Dancing producers after he made a cheeky quip during Saturday night’s live show.

The judge, 57, was giving his critiques after Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin‘s incredible Samba.

While praising the pair, he joked that he and his fellow judge Craig Revel Horwood had performed a similar dance move together while naked.

Anton quipped: ‘I said, “Why don’t we try that lift?” So he came at me and I said, “Shouldn’t you put some clothes on?”‘

He then added: ‘The only reason I’m telling you this is because I have nothing to say about this dance — it was pretty much perfect.’

Dressing down: Anton Du Beke has reportedly received a telling off by Strictly Come Dancing producers after he made a cheeky quip during Saturday night’s live show

Scoring: The judge, 57, was giving his critiques after Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin ‘s incredible Samba

Naughty! While praising the pair, he joked that he and his fellow judge Craig Revel Horwood (pictured) had performed a similar dance move together while naked

The audience gasped at the saucy joke and laughed, but the show’s producers weren’t so amused and allegedly told Anton to tone his comments down for the pre-watershed programme.

A source told The Sun: ‘Producers reminded Anton that Strictly is a family show and cheeky, subtle innuendo for the adult viewers is fine but he’d taken things a little too far.’

Viewers at home also took to Twitter to react to the saucy comment, with one writing: ‘Anton is killing me’ with several laughing emojis.

Another added: ‘Still laughing at Anton’s joke story about the ‘lift’ with Craig “he should have put clothes on” Brilliant! Love Anton’s humour’.

A third tweeted: ‘Wow Anton got a dirty mind ha ha’ while a third joked: ‘I’ll never get rid of that image of Anton and Craig now.’

It comes after Eddie Kadi was the fourth contestant to leave Strictly following Sunday’s dance-off with his dance partner Karen Hauer.

The comedian, 40, faced the dreaded dance off against former Love Islander Zara McDermott as both celebrities tried to impress the judges one last time.

But Eddie and Karen had to say their goodbyes after landing at the bottom of the leaderboard after scoring a disappointing 24 out of 40 for their Samba to Calm Down by Rema and Selena Gomez.

Rude: Anton quipped: ‘I said, “Why don’t we try that lift?” So he came at me and I said, “Shouldn’t you put some clothes on?”

Told off: The audience gasped at the saucy joke and laughed, but the show’s producers weren’t so amused and allegedly told Anton to tone his comments down for the pre-watershed programme

Hilarious: Viewers at home also took to Twitter to react to the saucy comment, with one writing: ‘Anton is killing me’ with several laughing emojis

Eddie and Karen were first up to perform in the dance off, before Zara and her dance partner Graziano Di Prima performed their American Smooth to Can’t Fight The Moonlight by LeAnn Rimes.

Motsi Mabuse, Craig and Anton were all in favour of Zara and Graziano, meaning the majority vote saw them through to another week.

Head judge Shirley Ballas also revealed Zara and Graziano had her vote.

Craig said: ‘For me the quality of dance in this couple was far superior and the couple I would like to save is Zara and Graziano.’

Meanwhile, Motsi said: ‘For me, it was extremely close. The quality was actually very, very close. It came down to details and I would love to save Zara and Graziano.’

Anton said: ‘Well, I thought that was an excellent dance off. I thought both couples danced very, very well but for me with a slightly cleaner technique, I’d like to save Zara and Graziano.’

Speaking about his time on the show, Eddie said: ‘I’ve really enjoyed this, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do – I love dancing.

‘This has been the highest moment of my career – it’s the happiest I’ve ever been, but not just for me – my family – my little baby girl is at home doing the Men in Black dance.

Gone: It comes after Eddie Kadi was the fourth contestant to leave Strictly following Sunday’s dance-off with his dance partner Karen Hauer

Farewell: The comedian, 40, faced the dreaded dance off against former Love Islander Zara McDermott as both celebrities tried to impress the judges one last time

‘More importantly, this little African boy, I just wanted my culture to shine. Everything I stand for, when it comes to my comedy, when it comes to my presenting, is based on my culture, is based on my upbringing and I wanted that to shine most importantly.

‘Even more importantly this wonderful Queen [to Karen], there are two parts to this show – we want to entertain, I believe that God has brought this to me, I just want to make people happy and this gem over here has kept me happy – I love you so much God bless you.’

Karen gushed: ‘You are a treasure, I’m going to miss you [to Eddie] – well I’ll see you tomorrow!

‘We’re going to take up Congolese dancing. I just want to thank you so much for being so positive and bringing such light and smiling, just a beauty to all of us, I want to thank you so much.’

Sunday’s results show also featured the professional dancers taking viewers back in time with a fabulous 60s Fosse-inspired number and a special Planet Earth III themed performance of Pompeii from Bastille in the ballroom.

The remaining couples will take to the dancefloor next week for a spook-tacular Halloween special on Saturday October 28 at 6:40pm.

It’s over: But Eddie and Karen had to say their goodbyes after landing at the bottom of the leaderboard after scoring a disappointing 24 out of 40 for their Samba to Calm Down by Rema and Selena Gomez

Live to see another day: Zara and her dance partner Graziano Di Prima performed their American Smooth to Can’t Fight The Moonlight by LeAnn Rimes
