DANNY MURPHY: The offside law is a JOKE and needs to be changed quickly | Daily Mail Online

February 8, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

If Manchester United‘s equaliser was deemed correct by the letter of the law, the law is a joke and needs to be changed.

As someone who played the game, I know for sure that Marcus Rashford interfered with play from an offside position regardless of whether he touched the ball.

Ederson would never have been so far off his line if he hadn’t been concerned about Rashford’s presence, thereby giving Bruno Fernandes an easy job to score. Likewise, Kyle Walker would have tracked Bruno’s run had Rashford not been there.

The law needs changing quickly if Bruno Fernandes’ equaliser is deemed to be lawful

Either way the authorities have to understand you can have a serious impact from an offside position even without playing the ball. The offside rule has to be simplified because, although Saturday’s case was relatively rare, it could happen again.

Rashford was very clever. At the last moment realising he was offside, he withdrew from any attempt to play the ball.

What disturbs me is his positioning changed the dynamic in how City defended the move. I can understand therefore why they were so aggrieved at the reward.

Football at its best is a fair competition between attack and defence. The way the offside law is being interpreted is making it ridiculously difficult to defend.

‘It’s a joke that it can be allowed’ – Manuel Akanji slams offside decision for Manchester United goal vs Man City – Manchester Evening News

February 8, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Manuel Akanji has slammed the match officials for allowing Bruno Fernandes’ goal to stand in Manchester City’s Premier League derby defeat to Manchester United.

Leading through Jack Grealish’s second goal of the season, City were ten minutes away from completing the double over their rivals, but were pegged back in controversial fashion as Marcus Rashford was played in on goal when he was clearly offside.

Rashford continued his run, occupying Akanji, until Bruno Fernandes took over at the last minute to lift the ball over the advancing Ederson from under Rashford’s nose. As Rashford didn’t touch the ball, despite being offside, the goal was allowed to stand, and the striker scored United’s winner four minutes later.

Akanji was closest to Rashford, and altered his run to attempt to defend against the United number 10 rather than move closer to Fernandes to close the ball down – allowing the goalscorer the space to score.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Akanji couldn’t hide his fury, by describing the decision as a joke and questioning why VAR did not take a look after the assistant referee initially flagged Rashford offside.

“To be honest for me the first goal is a joke that it can be allowed like this,” Akanji said.

“I see Rashford, he’s clearly offside so I play him offside. He runs to the last second and stops when the ball is right in front of him and right in front of Eddy [Ederson] to score the goal. Then he stops because Bruno is calling him because he’s not offside.

“I understand he doesn’t touch the ball but he runs for 30 metres, he’s chasing the ball. It’s clearly offside.

“Also the referee doesn’t even look at the situation. When it gets explained at the beginning of the year I thought it was clearly offside. In the end it’s not offside.”

Fellow centre-back Nathan Ake also agreed with Akanji’s assessment, telling BBC Radio Manchester: “It was very frustrating. I think from my point of view he is interfering with play. For the goalkeeper, for our defenders it is difficult to see what they can do because he is still there a second before Fernandes shoots the ball.

“He definitely interfered, in my opinion, but the referee gives it and after that we lost our way. We tried to maybe force it straight away to get back into the game but we left ourselves too open for the counter-attack and they were waiting for that.”

Shaq breaks down in laughter as he debuts new ‘crooked’ haircut inspired by ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith | Daily Mail Online

February 7, 2023 by humorouz Leave a Comment

NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal broke down in laughter after debuting his new haircut he joked was inspired by Stephen A. Smith.

O’Neal appeared alongside Adam Lefkoe and Candace Parker for a segment of TNT Tuesday before the Oklahoma Thunder and Miami Heat game on Tuesday.

The former basketball star’s ‘crooked’ hairline didn’t go unnoticed as he leaned into Frye to refer to him by an alias upon sitting down.

‘To my right, a four-time champion, Stephen A. Shaq,’ Lefkoe joked while introducing O’Neal. ‘You know, we had plans but when that hairline walks in it’s something we gotta discuss.

‘Shout out to my main man, Stephen A,’ the NBA legend added while pointing at his hairline that started in the middle of his head.

Parker was swift to notice that O’Neal’s hear line was crooked and wasn’t shy to call it out on air.

‘Ay, is that – crooked?’ Parker asked.

‘Is it crooked?’ O’Neal responded as the camera zoomed in for a closer look.

Tears of laughter welled in O’Neal’s eyes as Lefkoe reassured his hair ‘looked good.’

‘Oh it is crooked,’ the Hall of Famer said while pointing the blame at his barber.

‘Bill I’ma kill you when I get home Bill,’ he laughed.

Commenters on Twitter were swift to add onto the banter.

‘Shaq’s hair line looks like he’s been wearing lace front wigs for a while,’ one person wrote.

‘Is that a 7 or 8 head?’ another person added.

‘Is Shaq preparing his forehead for NBA Mount Rushmore?’

He then pointed blame at his barber and said: ‘Bill I’ma kill you when I get home Bill’

The former basketball star also appeared for a short segment on NBA TV with Kristen Ledlow and Channing Frye.

His co-hosts didn’t hesitate to mock O’Neal’s new style before he walked on set.

‘I’ve been told though that our Hall of Famer, Shaquille O’Neal, is not available, but instead, Stephen A. Shaq is on the line,’ Ledlow joked.

‘Don’t laugh at my haircut,’ O’Neal said while Ledlow insisted the camera crew zoom in the legend’s head.

‘Zoom in, that boy looking good ain’t he,’ added while welcoming the playful criticism.
