Football’s strangest transfer and contract clauses as Liverpool slam “joke” Sadio Mane bid – Mirror Online

November 27, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

So it seems like Liverpool aren’t too impressed with the package Bayern Munich put together to sign Sadio Mane. In fact, they think it’s a “joke”.

The forward seems to be the number one target for the German side, who could yet lose Robert Lewandowski this summer. Mane would be something of a replacement and the Bavarians want to take advantage of the fact he has a year remaining on his deal, leaving the Reds in a precarious position.

They offered an initial £23.5m, with additional add-ons of around £6.5m to take the total close to £30m. That is less than Liverpool signed him for, but the player’s want to leave may yet force their hand. However they won’t be letting him go on the cheap and they’ve taken issue with some of the add-ons.

They claim they would be nearly impossible to achieve. The most eye raising being a bonus that would only be paid if Sadio Mane won the Ballon d’Or on three occasions – he currently has none. Bayern would also have to scoop a hat trick of Bundesliga titles, along with European trophies, for other bonus payments to be activated.

As a result it looks as if the German side will be heading back to the negotiation table. Liverpool chiefs have told the club not to bother returning unless their valuation of Mane, which is north of £40m, is met.

Transfers are often compiled of bonus payments, which helps get the initial fee down. However some of the structures and offers can often be bizarre. As can some of the clauses players add to their own contracts. We take a look at a few of the more surprising conditions.

Liverpool get their own back

Back in the summer of 2013 the Reds had to fend off interest in Luis Suarez from domestic rivals Arsenal. A rumoured clause was in the Uruguayan’s contract that saw the Gunners bid £40m + £1 – a move that backfired on them. Nevertheless the bad blood remained.

So much so that when the Reds signed Roberto Firmino they included a €98million release clause in the Brazilian’s contract “if the interested club is not Arsenal.” It is as if the forward knew of the ill feeling because he’s continued to score against the north Londoners – bagging a hat-trick in 2018.

Firmino also pockets handsome goal bonus – allegedly earning £25,000 for each of his first five goals a season, £45,000 for his goals between six and 10, £65,000 from 11 to 15, and £85,000 from then on.

No fly zone

Arsenal completed a coup when they signed Dennis Bergkamp from Inter Milan back in the 1990s. They perhaps didn’t know they’d added a club legend however. That said, the Dutchman was rarely present for European away days.

Why? Well he had a fear of flying and had a clause inserted into his Arsenal contract which meant he didn’t have to get on a plane. The decision cost him £100,000, but clearly he felt that was good value.

He said previously: “I’ve got this problem and I have to live with it. I can’t do anything about it, it is a psychological thing and I can’t explain it. The Dutch FA has been sympathetic, so have have Arsenal, so far. I am considering psychiatric help. I can’t fly. I just freeze. I get panicky. It starts the day before, when I can’t sleep.”

Party, party, party

Ronaldinho may have been arguably the finest player of his generation, leading Barcelona to the Champions League in 2006. His flicks and tricks saw him earn celebrity status, staring in adverts with Nike.

However the Brazilian also loved a night out. So much so that he had a clause included in his Flamengo contract that allowed him to go out until the early hours at least twice a week without any knock on affects.

Bein Sports reported that failure to agree to such a clause would’ve been a deal breaker for the World Cup winner.

Suarez bites back

This one remains shrouded in mystery. There were rumours that Barcelona included a no biting clause into Suarez’s contract when they signed him in 2014. The forward had infamously bit Branislav Ivanovic during a game at Anfield in 2013.

Then, at the 2014 World Cup, he took a bite out of Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini, but that didn’t stop the Catalans pursuing the deal and, whilst they made their expectations clear, the club’s president denied any biting clause.

Josep Maria Bartomeu said: “No, no. We didn’t rethink this decision and we told Luis after the bite. He knows he did wrong. He apologized. That’s very important for us. That means he knows that he did not do things properly — and of course, coming to our city, coming to our club, there’s going to be a way of managing Luis Suarez.”

Ox’s short stay

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is now at Liverpool, but before that spent seven years at Arsenal. He wasn’t always a started though which saw questions asked of then manager Arsene Wenger.

It later became known that his boyhood club Southampton were earning each time Oxlade-Chamberlain played for a prolonged period. It has since emerged that Southampton would earn £10,000 every time he played 20 minutes or more.

That meant the midfielder was often coming on beyond the 70 minute mark to allow him to make an impact, but without the club feeling any financial affects.

No space for Schwarz

Stefan Schwarz moved to Sunderland for £4m back in 1999 but the Black Cats made it clear that the player would not be heading beyond earth’s atmosphere.

Sunderland’s chief executive, John Fickling told BBC Radio 5 Live at the time: “One of Schwarz’s advisers has, indeed, got one of the places on the commercial flights. And we were worried that he may wish to take Stefan along with him. So we thought we’d better get things tied up now rather than at the time of the flight.

“It was a reasonable request. We would normally get insurance cover for the player throughout the length of his contract. And like a lot of insurance policies there are certain exclusions, such as dangerous activities. At the end of the day we are protecting the club, really. It was a little bit of a light-hearted moment during protracted negotiations.

“But one day it could become be quite acceptable to put such clauses in various contracts.”

Ruddock’s weight clause

Neil Ruddock moved to Crystal Palace from a free transfer from West Ham in 2000, but included a weight clause on the advice of Harry Redknapp. Former Eagles chairman Simon Jordan stipulated that Ruddock would be fined every time he went over his ‘recommended weight’, 99.8kg.

He wrote in his autobiography: “On approaching West Ham I discovered he was a free transfer, although he did have a weighty salary – which was not the only weighty thing about him. Harry Redknapp, the West Ham manager at the time, told me to put in a weight clause.

“So I decided to put a 10 per cent penalty on the contract we were proposing to offer him if he was over the recommended weight of 99.8kg, which by the way was still frigging huge.” Ruddock would, according to reports, be fined eight times.

Five things spotted in Man United training as Erik ten Hag consults inner circle and has joke with Cristiano Ronaldo – Manchester Evening News

November 27, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Manchester United players were working hard at Carrington on Wednesday ahead of their visit to FC Sheriff in the Europa League on Thursday night.

United supporters are expecting a big reaction from Erik ten Hag ‘s side after last week’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Spanish side Real Sociedad on matchday one.

The Reds were not in action at the weekend, with their scheduled match against Crystal Palace postponed following the death of the Queen on Thursday, September 8. United’s planned clash against Leeds United on Sunday has also been postponed due to a shortage of police officers ahead of the Queen’s funeral on Monday, September 19.

MEN Sport has taken a look at Wednesday’s training session and here is what we spotted.

Ronaldo and Ten Hag enjoy a laugh

Although Cristiano Ronaldo has only started two matches for United so far this season, he still seems to be forming a good relationship with manager Ten Hag.

While the United No.7 is bound to be desperate for more minutes than he has been getting in recent weeks, the pair could be seen laughing together after the Dutchman made a joke with Ronaldo and Ten Hag all smiles during the training session at Carrington. The Portuguese international, who is expected to feature against Sheriff on Thursday night, appears to be content at Old Trafford after a summer of speculation.

Ten Hag’s inner circle

Ten Hag in conversation with two of his Man United coaches

The Dutchman has enjoyed a steady start to his reign as United boss, and his coaching staff are clearly a massive part of how he operates at the club. Ten Hag was spotted in conversation with assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag and technical director Darren Fletcher.

Ten Hag relies on, and values, his coaches’ opinions – especially on the training pitch. Ahead of an important clash in Europe, United will need to be firing on all cylinders in order to record their first win of their Europa League campaign.

Antony integrating well

Antony has been impressive since joining Man United from Ajax

Since arriving from Ajax in the summer, Antony has impressed in his two outings in a red shirt. The Brazilian, who scored on his debut against Arsenal, appears to be a popular member of the first-team squad.

He was seen speaking to centre-back Lisandro Martinez during the training session on Wednesday, with the Argentine defender putting his arm around the 22-year-old. Antony has also formed a strong bond on the flank with right-back Diogo Dalot since arriving at Old Trafford.

Eriksen’s orders

Eriksen during a training session at Carrington on Wednesday

Christian Eriksen is proving to be a shrewd addition for the Reds, with the Dane dictating play from the base of midfield in recent weeks – helping Ten Hag’s men to four successive wins in the Premier League. During the session at Carrington, the 30-year-old appeared to issue orders to his teammates during a training drill.

Given has vast experience, the former Tottenham man will be a big help for United’s younger midfielders. His partnership with Scott McTominay has been solid in recent weeks.

Maguire in good spirits

Maguire has started just three matches for Man United so far this season

Harry Maguire has only made four appearances for United so far this season – starting on just three occasions. He has dropped down the pecking order with Martinez and Varane forming an impressive partnership.

It remains to be seen if the England centre-back will be selected for the Three Lions’ squad by Gareth Southgate on Thursday, but he was still all smiles during training on Wednesday.

Watch: Crazy moment mako shark jumps onto Coromandel charter boat – NZ Herald

November 26, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

A group of people fishing on a Coromandel charter got more than they bargained for when a large Mako shark jumped in their boat giving them a once-in-a-lifetime experience as well as an almighty fright.

On Saturday Churchys Charter NZ skipper Ryan Churches was out off the coast of Whitianga with five customers on the hunt for kingfish.

However, something a lot larger had decided to not only make an appearance but spectacularly drop into their boat after being hooked on the bait.

The wild event was caught on camera, showing the large sea creature crash-landing on the bow of the boat before thrashing around and slamming its tail into the windscreen.

Churches told the Herald it was the first time he’s ever witnessed a shark jumping into a boat, describing the incident as “bonkers”.

“We were out at the Aldermans fishing with five customers on board winding a bait in and the mako took the bait.

“We were fighting it normally and it was jumping around. I told the customers ‘if it jumps in the boat get out of the way’.

“It just so happened that about 30 seconds later it jumped on the top of the boat. It was crazy. We were all watching the rod and the line was going out to the side of the boat and it changed direction suddenly… it just happened to jump at the same time and we got a hell of a fright.”

The Churchys Charters NZ skipper estimated the Mako was about 150kg and as long as eight to nine feet in length.

After crash landing on the boat, the Mako was thrashing around trying to escape for a maximum of “two-minutes tops”.

Churches said there were concerns they would have to intervene and attempt to help the shark free, a move that would have been highly dangerous.

However, he said the shark managed to wriggle free and were counting their blessings he didn’t land on the back of the boat where all the customers were.

“He got away safe. There’s nothing much we could do. We can’t go up the front to go near it because they go absolutely bonkers.

“We dropped the anchor down a little bit because it seemed to be holding it in place [on the boat]. He went absolutely bonkers again and pushed himself through the bow rail and slid back into the water.

“I was trying to figure out ways of how to get it off if it didn’t slide off. I was thinking what the f*** do we do? But it all worked out.

“The customers reacted better than what a lot of people would have. The cameras were out, but they probably didn’t realise the danger we could have been in.

“We were lucky it was on the front of the boat and we had windscreens and hard tops blocking it. We were lucky it didn’t come into the back of the boat otherwise it could have a wildly different story.”

An average adult Mako is around 2.5 to 3.2 m (8.2 to 10.5 ft) in length and can weigh on average between 135–230 kg.

Mako sharks live near the surface of the ocean and in coastal waters, and are found around the coast of New Zealand, more commonly in the North Island.

They are known for jumping clear of the water when hooked, sometimes as much as 10m – and have been reported to land in boats.

It’s not the first time a Mako has landed on a boat in the Coromandel.

In 2021, Whangamatā fishing buddies Kane O’Reilly and Murray Clarke counted their lucky stars after they hooked a massive mako shark that jumped out of the water and landed on the roof of their boat.

“I was winding it in and it got heavier and heavier,” O’Reilly said.

He said the shark bolted down on a heavy drag, turned round and headed straight to the boat, flying about 5m out of the water six to seven metres away.

“The shark hit the water, did another massive jump and landed about 1m off the boat, which scared the shit out of us.

A minute or so later, the shark broke off the fishing hook and disappeared.

O’Reilly estimated the shark was about 4m long when it came crashing on to his 7.6m aluminium hardtop Marco southwester called Black Betty.

“It would have been 400kg. It was massive, absolutely massive.

“I told my mate to gas the boat to get out of here because I said it is going to jump in the cockpit,” O’Reilly said.

“The next thing I felt this massive bang like we had just run into a ship and I said to my mate ‘what the hell was that’ and this bloody shark rolled off the roof and down the windscreen and on to the deck and then rolled off,” O’Reilly said.

Jack Wilshere gets the last laugh with Bukayo Saka remark after claims of bias – Mirror Online

November 26, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere feared he’d be accused of bias after he claimed England fans aren’t fully aware of just how good Bukayo Saka is – they do now, after the winger’s inspired display against Iran.

Wilshere discussed the 21-year-old Gunners star before the Three Lions’ opening game of the Qatar World Cup when it was still unclear whether Saka would be named in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI. The former Arsenal star and England international explained how he would have been shocked had the forward not made the line-up.

Debate among the England fanbase over whether Saka or Manchester City’s Phil Foden should start was rife before kick-off, but Southgate ended up opting for the in-form Emirates hero, something Wilshere had predicted all along.

Writing in The Sun, the now-retired midfielder explained: “I wonder if the England fans realise what a truly great player we have in Bukayo Saka. Yes, I know I’ll be accused of bias because Bukayo plays for Arsenal but, honestly, he has special gifts.

“What amazes me about him is he always makes the right decision, it’s incredible.

“It is so rare for a young player – he’s only just turned 21 – to instinctively know what is right in any given situation. I stress with my Arsenal Under-18 players to study him.”

HAVE YOUR SAY! Should Saka be one of the first names on the England teamsheet moving forward? Comment below

Wilshere will be hoping his Arsenal youth stars were watching on Monday afternoon, as Saka proved just too hot for Iran to handle.

Less than 18 months after his European Championship penalty heartache, the Gunners winger showed no sign of any emotional hangover as he bagged twice on his World Cup debut.

The first of his goals came midway through the first half, with Saka responding fastest to a loose ball after Harry Maguire’s header was blocked. The Hale End academy graduate fired a lethal volley into the roof of the net to double England’s advantage following Jude Bellingham’s opener.

Saka wasn’t done there, with more goal-scoring heroics to come after the interval.

England went in at the break 3-0 up courtesy of Raheem Sterling’s strike just before half-time and Saka put the game beyond any doubt with his second and the Three Lions’ fourth.

Saka held his nerve inside the penalty area to beat the oncoming challenges of two Iran defenders and then proceeded to calmly slot his left-footed strike into the bottom corner of the net.

The Arsenal star was eventually replaced by Marcus Rashford, who also got on the scoresheet just minutes after being brought on. Saka’s performance ensured Wilshere’s pre-match praise was more than justified.
