Conor McGregor’s rise from apprentice plumber to one of the biggest sports stars in the world has not always been plain sailing.

The Irishman was collecting unemployment cheques in Dublin before he made his UFC debut against Marcus Brimage in 2013.

But he quickly acquired fame – and notoriety – rarely seen in the sport of mixed martial arts.

And as he was preparing to take on featherweight champion Jose Aldo in 2015 – before the Brazilian pulled out injured – McGregor revealed he was being harassed by an obsessed female fan.

Reading from his phone during the Notorious documentary, McGregor says: “The email is ‘For Conor’s eyes only please’ and this is about the 150th.

Conor McGregor has become a fans' favourite

“Hi Conor, after my last relationship broke down I had a very powerful feeling in my body that I was soon to meet the love of my life. At around the same time I had the vision of being in Vegas.

“I do need one thing from you at this stage, please be honest about what is going on here.

“I feel like we have been sharing this love online and elsewhere. I see us having a number of children; Ella, Shannon, Conor, Hugh, Michael, James, Seamus are some names I have in mind.

“Now, I have not written back to this crazy b**** once, but she keeps on sending emails, emails, emails – like big detailed ones like that, naming the kids and things, its f****** up, isn’t it?

“What do you do with that? That b**** will show up at the gaff one day with a bleedin’ gun or something.”

McGregor was catapulted into the limelight as he became a two-weight world champion by beating first Aldo and then lightweight ruler Eddie Alvarez a year later.

But he took his fame to a new level when he earned close to £100million for his fight with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather in 2017.

McGregor was stopped in the 10th round but the fight generated more than £500m through pay-per-view sales and tickets.

Since then McGregor, who is engaged to long-time girlfriend Dee Devlin, has fought just twice, losing to bitter rival Khabib Nurmagomedov before beating Donald Cerrone 12 months ago.

Next Saturday, McGregor takes on Dustin Poirier for a second time as he bids to launch another charge at the lightweight title.
