Time magazine raked over the coals for ‘sycophantic’ cover of Joe Biden: ‘What a joke’

May 21, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

After four years of magazine covers disparaging former President Donald Trump, Time magazine has offered up extremely glowing covers of President Joe Biden. The most recent cover of Time magazine features a flattering illustration of President Biden, which many online commenters ridiculed for being “sycophantic.”

Last year, Time was roasted for making Joe Biden and Kamala Harris the magazine’s “Person of the Year.” Last November, Time celebrated Biden’s presidential victory by calling him a “dragon slayer,” saying that his election represented a “time to heal.”

Time continued its highly favorable coverage of President Biden with a new cover that was so over-the-top praiseworthy that it was widely mocked online.

President Biden will meet up with Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 16 in Geneva, Switzerland. Ahead of the summit, Time’s latest edition features an illustration of Biden wearing his signature aviator sunglasses, which have the reflection of Putin in the lenses. Biden seemingly appears to be champing at the bit to engage with his Russian counterpart. The headline on the cover says, “Taking on Putin.”

The image of the 78-year-old Biden makes him appear years younger with zero wrinkles and taut skin.

Several Twitter reactions put a spotlight on Biden waiving sanctions against the company that is building the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline from Russia into Germany. The pipeline would enable Russia to bypass Ukraine and freely flow natural gas into Europe. Previously, the Trump administration attempted to hinder the development of the pipeline so that Europe would purchase gas from the United States.

Former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell reacted by saying, “Giving him a pipeline of leverage into Europe is NOT taking him on. It’s giving in.”

Cliff Sims, a former senior adviser to the DNI, said, “Yea, Putin is quivering in his boots after Biden handed him his number one geopolitical infrastructure project on a platter so he can work with the Germans on climate change. What a joke.”

Washington Examiner writer Jerry Dunleavy wrote, “Biden takes on [the Republicans, Democrats, Eastern European allies, Ukrainians, etc. who opposed the corrupt Kremlin-backed Nord Stream 2 pipeline which every honest person knows is a malign influence operation which will ultimately benefit] Putin.”

“If by taking Putin on you mean allowing him to build his massive pipeline while shutting ours down,” one Twitter user wrote.

National Review’s Kyle Smith tweeted, “DNC press releases aren’t this sycophantic.”

An online commenter asked, “What in the hell kind of fan fiction comic book is this cover?”

One person stated, “TIME has to use photoshop to show Biden younger than Putin. Is this ‘takes on?'”

Multiple Twitter users joked that “Biden can’t even take on stairs, let alone Putin,” referencing the time President Biden stumbled down the stairs leading up to Air Force One.

Young America’s Foundation lampooned the laudatory press coverage of the Democratic president, “tHe MeDiA dOeSn’T PiCk SiDeS.”

Real Clear Politics co-founder Tom Bevan showed the stark difference between Time magazine’s gushing cover of Biden and a cover of Trump’s face blended with Putin’s.

Washington Post erased Kamala Harris’ crass joke about inmates from a 2019 story — then put it back after they got caught

May 21, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

A year and a half ago when Vice President Kamala Harris was gunning for the Democratic presidential nomination, the Washington Post published a story looking at her close relationship with her sister Maya that contained what some might call a disturbing anecdote.

What are the details?

In short, Harris likened the effects of the fast pace and long days and nights of the campaign trail to how a desperate, overwhelmed prisoner might feel begging for food and water. Here’s how the first seven paragraphs of story read when it was originally published on July 23, 2019, Reason reported:

Yup, she laughed. At her own ill-advised joke. Not the best look.

And Reason noted the effectiveness of the Post’s story:

At the time, Harris was fair game like all the other Democratic hopefuls wanting a shot at the White House. Indeed, she was an early front-runner, which made her an even bigger target for the media. But less than five months after the Post’s profile ran, Harris dropped out of the race as he poll numbers plummeted and the staff departed.

Oh my how things have changed in two years

Reason took a look again at the Post’s 2019 story — and discovered that, lo and behold, Harris’ cringeworthy joke was gone.

Turns out the paper put together an online series prior to the inauguration, and when Reason asked the Post’s communications manager why the story was changed, the outlet said it got this response: “We repurposed and updated some of our strong biographical pieces about both political figures” and the story in question “was updated with new reporting, as noted online, using the existing URL. The original story remains available in print.”

What’s more, it appears the Post did some fast fixing.

Reason’s story about the Post doing a “memory-hole” number was published at 10:25 a.m. Friday. But in an new update note, Reason told its readers that as of 1:15 p.m. the Post had “updated its website and URLs to restore the original version of the Kamala Harris profile.”

Sure, the repurposed story dated Jan. 11 without Harris’ anecdote is still there — but a number of other links that Reason said redirected users to the sanitized Harris story were restored so that they now go to the original.

“We should have kept both versions of the story on the Post’s site (the original and updated one), rather than redirecting to the updated version,” Kris Coratti, the Post’s vice president for communications, told Reason on Friday. “We have now done that, and you will see the link to the original at the top of the updated version.”

Anything else?

Reason had an inkling of what may have been at the heart of things:

Eric Boehm, author the Reason piece, added that “at a time when legacy publications are increasingly seen as playing for one political ‘team’ or the other, this type of editorial decision will not do anything to fix that perception — is there any doubt that the Post would not have treated an inartful comment from Mike Pence in the same way?”

“Intentional or not, the memory-holing of the older version of the piece sends a message that the
Post is willing to pave over its own good journalism to protect a powerful politician from her own words,” he concluded.

Manchester United stars told to ‘shut up’ as Fred brands Ralf Rangnick’s interim appointment ‘strange’ but insists Champions League glory this season ‘isn’t crazy’

May 21, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Manchester United midfielder Fred and his teammates have been told to ‘shut up’ after he admitted the decision to appoint an interim manager to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was ‘a little bit strange’.

The Brazilian midfielder revealed he felt the decision to bring in Ralf Rangnick in until the end of the season has left a degree of uncertainty around Old Trafford.

Fred scored against Leeds but has been frank with his thoughts about United’s managerial plan

Rangnick was appointed as temporary successor to Solskjaer at the start of December with results a mixed bag since then.

The German manager, who will take up a consultancy role at the end of the campaign when a permanent boss is employed, has struggled to get some of his stars firing, although there are now some green shoots.

Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo have been among those struggling but English starlet Jadon Sancho is now begininng to flourish.

And Fred feels the club should have had a long-term approach to replacing Solskjaer.

“It is a bit strange,” he said in an interview with TNT Sports Brazil. “I know in football it’s important to get good results as soon as possible, but it’s also important to have a long-term plan.

“I think it’s a little bit bad for us not to have one, at the moment it’s all about the short-term goals. We don’t know how it’s going to be after the end of this season.”

Former Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor was less than impressed with the interview and believes Red Devils stars should focus on their football rather than talking to the press.

He told talkSPORT Breakfast: “Scored a goal have we, Fred?

“I just don’t get it. You’ve had an amazing performance against Leeds, you battered Leeds, Fred scored and you have a big game tonight – stop talking!

“Get your head down, get your recovery done the next day, you’re probably flying out to Madrid the day after. Why are these players talking so much? I don’t get it.

“Stop talking about things you don’t need to. If I’m the manager, I’m fuming.

He added: “I just don’t understand. If I’m Rangnick I’m thinking, ‘oh, here we go, another little player is talking’. Just shut up and keep performing on the pitch.”

Manchester United look set for another trophyless campaign – their fourth in a row – but it’s something the club’s superstars are desperate to avoid as they get set to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night – live on talkSPORT 2.

“Every player that comes to this club wants to win titles,” said Fred, who joined from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018 – a year after the club’s last trophy.

“It’s the same with me, Bruno [Fernandes], Alex [Telles], Cristiano [Ronaldo], [Jadon] Sancho, all of us. We want trophies but it’s been a long drought.

“With all due respect to Villarreal, it was our job to win that Europa League final and we failed. It’s about having a better football planning on the club.

Can United stars deliver a shock Champions League win? Fred doesn’t think it’s a crazy idea
GETTY

“If you don’t want to win titles you don’t deserve to play for Manchester United. We’re still in the Champions League but let’s see if we arrive better on next season to find our peak football.”

And when asked if it was crazy to think about the Red Devils winning the Champions League this year, Fred said: “I don’t think so.

“I know we’re not playing our best football, but we have a lot of quality names in our squad. I see many other teams playing far off from their best as well.

“[To win it] wouldn’t be crazy, it could happen, but we have to work our socks off because we’re far away from being one of the favourites in this competition.”

Jungle Cruise: The Rock Says He Has “Never Ever” Worked With Someone Who Made Him Laugh Harder Than Emily Blunt

May 20, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Jungle Cruise hit theatres and Disney+ last month and sees Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt on an adventure that’s based on the Disneyland attraction of the same name. Not only do Johnson and Blunt have a lot of fun together onscreen, but their real-life chemistry has made for a delightful press tour. In fact, it was recently announced that the dynamic duo would be re-teaming for a movie about Kate Warne, the first woman to become a detective at the Pinkerton Agency. In honor of Johnson’s and Blunt’s fun times, The Rock recently took to Instagram to say he’s never worked with anyone who made him laugh harder. We hope Kevin Hart isn’t too hurt by this news!

“Here’s the gospel ~ I have never EVER worked with any other costar in my life who makes me laugh harder than this one. Man we talk shit and laugh so f’n hard and all future press junkets will forever pale in comparison to ours. But this level of comfort and ease, comes with trust ~ and trust ignites the chemistry and that chemistry is what you guys have loved on screen in JUNGLE CRUISE. We appreciate and love you guys for loving the movie and cheers to takin’ shit, a lot of trust, and laughing hard,” Johnson wrote. You can check out their latest fun video below:

“It’s such a cool dynamic to watch because they’re polarized from each other,” Blunt recently shared with ET Online about her and Johnson’s characters. “They have such different philosophies on life and their sense of humor, like how they walk into every day, it’s just completely the antithesis of one another. So, I think it makes for this really fun interplay between them that’s reminiscent of those Romancing the Stone films … That clash of like two people that are kind of storming into each other’s world.”

While Jungle Cruise‘s critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes ended up being a mediocre 63%, Johnson recently celebrated the Disney film’s audience score, 92%, which is the best of his career. During its opening weekend, Jungle Cruise grossed $90 million worldwide and Johnson teased that a sequel could be in the works. In addition to Johnson and Blunt, Jungle Cruise stars Jack Whitehall, Edgar Ramirez, Jesse Plemons, Veronica Falcón, and Paul Giamatti. The film was helmed by Jaume Collet-Serra who will also be directing Johnson in Black Adam.

Jungle Cruise is now playing in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access. If you haven’t signed up for Disney+ yet, you can try it out here.
