‘Is This A Prank?’: Nancy Pelosi Reads Poem By Bono To Comfort Afflicted Ukrainians, Leaving Everybody Bewildered

May 11, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) teased on Thursday morning that she would be reading a poem written by Bono for the Ukrainian people at Congress’ annual Friends of St. Patrick luncheon that afternoon. It was seemingly out of the blue and the instant reaction on Twitter was simple: “Why?”

At the luncheon, she read poetry by the lead singer of U2, Bono — who is an Irishman himself. It compared St. Patrick to Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelensky.

Based on tweets, it seems that “Why?” transformed into more of a “What in the world?” The spectacle was truly bizarre.

As flagged by Greg Price, Pelosi told the media Thursday morning, “I will be reading a poem written by Bono about Ukraine which you might find interesting.”

Many people did, but not for the reasons the speaker may have hoped.

Miranda Devine of the New York Post quipped, “Third in line. 81 years old. Unhinged.”

One Twitter user opined, “Good god this is getting worse every single day. The kabuki theater and virtue signaling from hell. Only war escalation and zero efforts toward peace. This country is lost.”

The phrase ‘Kabuki theater’ is a reference to a form of Japanese dramas, featuring heavy acting and elaborate costumes. The bad news for Americans everywhere is that is isn’t fiction. It was real life. There were dozens, if not hundreds, more mocking Pelosi.

Just prior to introducing River Dance at the luncheon, Pelosi read the poem by Bono. To put it in layman’s terms, it was even more cringe-worthy than one would expect.

“I got this message this morning from Bono,” Pelosi said before reading the rhyme. “Most of us — whether we’re in Ireland or here — Bono has been a very Irish part of our lives,” she added.

The full poem can be found here:

Oh Saint Patrick he drove out the snakes; With his prayers but that’s not all it takes; For the snake symbolizes; An evil that rises; And hides in your heart; As it breaks; And the evil has risen my friends; From the darkness that lives in some men; But in sorrow and fear; That’s when saints can appear; To drive out those old snakes once again; And they struggle for us to be free; From the psycho in this human family; Ireland’s sorrow and pain; Is now the Ukraine; And Saint Patrick’s name now Zelenskyy.

In response, The Federalist’s Ben Domenech tweeted something many readers might be wondering at this point, “Is this a prank? Did someone pretend to be Bono and sent her this?”

— Ben Domenech (@bdomenech) March 17, 2022

But it was not a prank at all. Pelosi was serious.

And it’s not the first time Pelosi has offered an off-key attempt to commemorate something.

On January 6, Pelosi invited the cast of the broadway musical “Hamilton” to preform one of its songs and discuss equity.

That was pretty bizarre, but the poem by Bono may have topped it.

Consider this: on Wednesday, Zelensky asked for a no-fly zone and America to come to Ukraine’s assistance. That would have been the start of World War III, so America sent nearly a billion more dollars in aid to Ukraine instead.

But, Pelosi tacking on a poem by Bono likely did not strike strike any fear into the heart of Russian President Vladimir Putin or inspire the Ukrainian people.

It may have done just the opposite.

Aaron Rodgers Calls Out Government Hypocrisy Over COVID: ‘It’s Becoming a Joke’

May 11, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

There is an argument to be made that part of our pandemic problem isn’t so much about people not following guidelines as about the people enforcing the guidelines on us not following those same guidelines themselves. Many Americans — as they wear a mask and stay six feet away from you as the CDC says — probably agree. Only the most partisan Palo Alto fact-checkers won’t. At least, in my opinion. The argument over lockdowns and corona guidelines can tend to fall on partisan lines. Lately, it feels like a broader group of Americans are speaking up and speaking out or, at the very least, asking questions. Whitney Cummings and Michael Rappaport aren’t exactly what I would call “MAGA.”

Neither is Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. At least, I don’t think. I’ve honestly never thought about his politics as much as how many fantasy points he was going to get me. But what he says on the Pat McAfee Show, I believe many of you reading this might agree.

NFL Star Aaron Rodgers Calls Out Gavin Newsom’s COVID Hypocrisy

Don’t eat out at a restaurant unless you’re wearing a mask and separate; oh, here’s a picture of the governor of California violating those rules. Oh, public schools are closed, but I can send my kids to a private school in person.

For us to count on the government to help us out is becoming a joke at this point.

Americans have been asked to put their lives on hold. Shut down their business, homeschool their children, and not see friends and family. In the beginning, many people went along with the guidelines without asking too many questions. But as the months went on, following guidelines not always being followed by the same people who set those guidelines can strain public trust. I think you’ll see more people speaking out.

Cheers, Aaron Rodgers. I’m going to hate to see the Buffalo Bills shut you down in the Super Bowl this year. FACT CHECK: I’m not going to hate it that much.

Donald Trump’s Planned Return Isn’t Really a Joke – Bloomberg

We have something new in U.S. politics: a pretender. Former President Donald Trump is still claiming that he really won the election, and is now saying he’ll be “reinstated” to office by August, after an audit of some kind provides proof of voter fraud. Some of his supporters are egging him on; others are going along with portions of the charade; still more are trying to ignore it all.

It’s tempting to treat the whole thing as a joke. But there are reasons to take it seriously. Political science Twitter takes us through it:

Seth Masket: “If Trump is trying to recruit allies for his reinstatement, at what point to we treat this not as a delusion but as a coup attempt? He kinda has priors.”

Lilly Goren: “Usually this turns into a civil war of some kind, at least if the deposed king is still wandering around. #Machiavelli had a lot to say about what to do with bloodlines, though that was much more in keeping with principalities and monarchies and not elected democracies/republics.”

See also Asha Rangappa and my Bloomberg Opinion colleague Francis Wilkinson.

It’s quite possible that Trump doesn’t realize what he’s proposing is flat-out illegal. That is, the choice Masket is posing is no choice at all: What Trump claims will happen, an extra-legal seizure of power, would be a coup regardless of whether he’s delusional or not. And we don’t even have to explore what he really thinks; as Benjy Sarlin points out, “What’s definitely true is he ACTS on conspiracy theories as if they were real.”

Sometimes (historical) fiction is helpful in explaining modern politics. The TV show “Outlander,” in its first three seasons, told the story of the 18th-century Jacobite revolt against the English in league with the pretender Charles Edward Stuart, or “Bonnie Prince Charlie.” The pretender is portrayed as a fairly ridiculous figure. Yet there are plenty who are willing to do his bidding, either because they truly believe in the cause, they suspect they can use the cause to further their own interests, or because their friends believe in the cause and they don’t want to contradict them. Since no one is willing to tell Stuart he’s a joke, he winds up leading them all to disaster, as the revolt is put down in battle. Indeed, since the show involves time travel, the central characters know for a fact that the rebellion is doomed, and where and how it is doomed, but they’re still helpless to stop it, largely because people around Stuart believe that he’s a royal.

“Outlander” is a historical romance, of course, but it illustrates a certain path dependency that seems to parallel what’s happening in the Republican Party. Presumably, only a handful of Republican politicians actually think that Trump will be president again by August, and most of them actually prefer abiding by the rule of law. But once the party sets up its pretender, the costs of taking him down rise rapidly. And each time they go along to get along, they make it that much harder to break out of the trap without both the party and those who risk taking Trump on bearing the costs.

Of course, it could all amount to nothing. Reporting suggests that some of Trump’s advisers are trying to steer him elsewhere. And while he’s known for his preoccupations, he’s also known for not following through on things, so perhaps he’ll get distracted rather than continuing to build the expectations of his strongest supporters. It’s also possible that more Republicans will decide that the costs of defying Trump are smaller than the costs (to themselves and the party) of trapping themselves further. Still, even if Trump was gone from the scene entirely, democracy in the U.S. would face serious dangers. And he’s not gone yet.

Klopp in awe of Tottenham’s ‘best in the world’ counter-attackers with ‘crazy’ speed | Evening Standard

May 10, 2022 by humorouz Leave a Comment

urgen Klopp described Tottenham’s frontline as the best in the world at what they do – in a warning to his Liverpool side ahead of their Premier League clash on Saturday.

The Reds need a win at Anfield to maintain their fight for the title but Harry Kane, Song Heung-min and Co will fancy their chances against a Liverpool defence that holds a notoriously high line.

However, Klopp is well aware of Spurs’ threat on the break, underlining their ability as the “best counter-attacking players in the world” under Antonio Conte.

“When you think about how Tottenham wins football games, they’re a brilliant football team – up front they have speed like crazy,” Klopp told reporters on Friday.

“Harry Kane, what a player. He obviously fits in that idea extremely well, there’s a blind understanding between [Tottenham’s forwards]. I’d say it’s probably the biggest challenge for protection we’ve faced for a long time.

“To win a football game, you have to create and be high up the pitch. But when you lose [the ball], you should be immediately around all of them, that’s difficult. We have to find a way to keep them calm as often as possible.”

Liverpool go into the game having booked a Champions League final date with Real Madrid, and Klopp is “happy” to get another crack at the side which beat them in the 2018 final after Los Blancos downed Manchester City in spectacular fashion.

“It was strange and unlucky for City but what Madrid did was outstanding,” he continued. “They got through against PSG, Chelsea and City… If you knock out these three teams, you definitely deserve to be in final.

“[The final] will be great. We were not happy that night [in 2018] but that was a while ago. I’m happy to go there and give it a try.”
